"The future of PC gaming is upon us," Microsoft claims in the video. "The question is, who will lead and who will follow? Are you ready to change the world? We are."

This is a case , of microshaft sticking thier heads up thier a-- with their foots in tow pointed at thier mouths.

ever since the original xbox came out some odd 10 years ago (Yoiks! its really been that long) MS as a PC gaming company has dwindled to near pointlessness dumbing down games for windows live further will only push them that much closer to be irrelivant. the fact is steam beat them to teh punch at a buisness they should have been the forefront in , and well the table is set game adn match , in short order it's too little too late MS.

for them to talk about "its a matter of who leads it"means they really are sticking thier heads up thier bums and or sniffing the paint thinner to much. Steam is already leading the pc game industry by such a large margin there is NOTHING MS can do short of making steam not work with windows , to catch up. and we all know what would happen if they tried that.

now don't get me wrong , i'm no MS hater, i use windows exclusively , i hate Apple and steve "blow" jobs. and yes i game on a xbox 360 and enjoy it , and i game on pc. but what i can not stand is seeing some one talking out of thier a-- about an indsutry they obviously left behind 10 years ago , like they are some kind of major player/inovator in it, the only two reasons , MS should even be mentioned next to PC gaming any more, is windows (more games play on it than any other OS ) and Direct X 9-11 (most popular API for games)

that's the end of my rant ,
now i'm gonna go hite a few rounds of Team fortress 2 and left 4 dead 2

[citation][nom]_Pez_[/nom]I do not understeand anything over here .. EX. I bought dirt2 trough steam BUT to be able to play and save my game advances, I must log on or make a new account in microsoft xbox not even pc LOL !! in order to put the key and be able to play the game online. so it is the same %$#/$#.[/citation]

this is not steams fault , many devs and publishers lieki MS insist taht steam version still carry thier bloat ware drm's in MS';s case teh games for windows live junk , it's worse with ubi soft , they insist on leaving securom on thier steam games ,(which securom is notoriously buggy as hell with digital downloads)

It might not be for hardcore users, but the 360 live service is a decent service that is user friendly. It has proven itself far better than any game matching service out there even in its dumbed-down capacity. It's probably good they're bringing this type of service to the PC gaming market.

At least with the Windows Marketplace service on the PC, if you purchase a game, you don't have to have Windows Live Service running on your PC in order to play even a single-player game (like Steam). You actually own the licensed copy of your software.

I'm sure if Microsoft works hard on this new GFWL, it will probably kick off. They have a huge opportunity with this... they could offer a vast list of PC games that could make D2D/Steam jealous. They could also revamp the gamer index score system and make it easy to tell what games they would be able to play on their PC. They could also offer suggestions for upgrades with discounts from sites like Newegg/TigerDirect and show how easy and cheap upgrading some parts in their PC will be (as most users think you have to spend thousands of dollars a year to play on the PC)

I wouldn't really be thrilled with it, but if it brought more gamers to PC with it's easy to use interface... Go for it.

[citation][nom]the_krasno[/nom]Thank god that we still have Steam as an alternative![/citation]

Steam all the way, 100x better than WLG. Glad DoW II moved over to Steam with their latest exp, I should pick that up.

Nobody ever really owns "licensed software" - they are granting you the right to play the game, nothing more. Hence, SecuROM Root-kit EA Games that came with 3~5 installs. You just paid $60 for a box and a disc. After those installs, your license dies and you cannot re-install the game. Funny thou, those who pirate those same games can of course install as much as they want (BioShock, Mirrors Edge, Spore, etc) - so much for anti-piracy. Rather a rip for those who upgrade every 9~12 months. Hence, I don't buy ANY EA Game.

Steam license Stays with you. Example, I haven't loaded/played Half Life 2 in 4+ years or installed STEAM. I was able to get that game back without any issues - it worked great!

This goes hand in hand with their new horrible interface that they designed for the next Windows. This is beyond irritating. It is things like this that make me push my developers more and more for Linux based gaming solutions that surpassed just emulation. Hopefully there will be enough negative response from the community at large to send a message of "DO NOT WANT" to Microsoft.

I couldn't bring myself to watch the video, the music annoyed me >.>

and games for windows....I still havent worked out what this is for tbh, it installed on my computer once and was promptly deleted. Didn't seem to serve a purpose *shrug* Either way, if microsoft stick a spanner into the pc gaming market I'd quite happily flee to mac (need a new laptop and apple are the only company that seem to do decent 13" laptops) or wait till steam hears the cries of the masses and ports to linux. Has anyone else see the debate on DirectX is hurting the gaming market on bit-tech? Damn interesting read. TBH apart from gaming I've no need for windows.

I liked the original Xbox Live Dashboard for the Xbox 360. The file folders with diff colors on them were much simpler and easier to find things. I wish Microsoft would give people an option to at least allow the user to fully customize their Xbox Live Dashboard to suit their own needs especially gold members that pay 50 dollars a year for a Live subscription. I mean Come on...

I dont really care to be honest i play some steam games and steam dosent bother me its ok not to intrusive etc. GFWL on the other hand i just don't bother with, they are just encouraging people to use one of the alternative methods of playing the game. Cracking it or just plain pirating it.
Personally i just plain don't buy/bother with it. If its GFWL it dosent exist.

If MS ever tried to force that crap on me in order to play games on my Win7 gaming rig I will sell it and buy a iMac. STEAM is on Mac now and even my Orange Box I bought for Windows, my STEAM account allows me to download it free to play on my Macbook Pro.

[citation][nom]opmopadop[/nom]Why oh why did Microsoft reinforce the pro-war USA lifestyle by mocking up an overexcited smiling kid inside Battlefield 2.Bad PR Microsoft, Bad.[/citation]

Now it seems the same casual interface is heading to the Games for Windows – Live client. In the video pasted below, Microsoft opens up the demo with Farmville and then switches over to an American Idol contest hosted by the "Idol Moms Group." The video then transitions into Avatar customizations, displaying a message that the Avatar "represents my style, attitude, and character. I can see and personalize my Avatar on the web, my PC, or while playing a game."
Ultimately the leaked Microsoft video was broken down into four main components: Social, Identity, Search and Transaction. "The future of PC gaming is upon us," Microsoft claims in the video. "The question is, who will lead and who will follow? Are you ready to change the world? We are."
i guess this is our clue that microsoft is telling us they are going to follow only. more proof they have fallen in with the dark side.

Mr.Burns:" yes my little sheeple, come and flock to me, i shall lead you into my little corner of a communist universe! SMITHERS get me that dolt with my mind control chip in his head, i need to expand his liberal sheeple programming to implement my latest mod-i-fic-a-tion!muwahahahaha muwahahahaha"
Smithers:" Homer Simpson?"
Mr.Burns:" No No No, my other drone, the gates one with the sandybridge inside!"
Smithers:" yes Sir, right away Mr. Burns!"
(sorry intel fans but the stage was already set, i very well could not jump ship to amd fusion now could i?)

so this current generation of gamers is already too smart for them they have to re-target a much younger generation to program to their ways. interesting.

[citation][nom]Restatement3dofTed[/nom]Does anyone actually use Games for Windows - Live? Until Steam does something like this, color me completely apathetic.[/citation]

Bulletstorm uses both Steam and Games for Windows Live, actual Batman AA Does as well, even the Dawn of War II series does, should i stop?

For now... Companies often have a tendency to become the bad guy eventually. Given enough time, the desire to reap more profits, a shift in the industry where they can no longer make as much or any profit, they'll start in with the evil.

Here's what deeply disturbed me. How does a company go from creating one of the best online platforms in xbox live, giving inde developers the first large stage platform to sell their works and talking about a "live anywhere" solution that would bring at experience to phones to falling behind in the phone market, copying nintendo's mii characters and still not having a solution for a online platform form the pc. Microsoft has effectively allowed everyone else to pass them in the one thing they did well. And to add further insult, they can event copy off of steam WHICH COPIED THEIR ONLINE EXPERIENCE FROM THEM!!! I don't get it. Steam just did what Microsoft did on the xbox.

After i got a reasonable pc i almost exclusively became a pc gamer. I have a broken xbox but no incentive to fix it. Better graphics and control options, mods, plus a much more mature community (there are exceptons of course). The only reason i see to back to live is they all of my friends play there. Forgive me but i just see no reason to pay the yearly subscription. Plus there is no way i'm interested in any of that avatar crap.

And it's not just them coming up with this garbage, it's that they Screwed it up everywhere else. We get to hear about the app store and psn network when If Microsoft just copied and pasted xbox live to windows mobile they may very well own the phone market right now.

Really Microsoft should have just bought steam and integrated live into that network but thankfully they didn't because they would probably screw steam up. I swear this is a problem with this company that old people who try to follow trends and have no clue what they really are about, or what their consumers in different markets want and it's a problem all over their company. I'm seriously starting to question Microsoft's entertainment division which is unfortunate because for the past 10 years that's been the only part of their company that seems like it has half a clue.
