Vista Premium 32-bit crashes with 4gb but not 2gb

I've had 2gb of ram (2x 1024mb pc-6400 OZC Platinum rev-2) installed for the past 6 months with no problems, however vista was using 65% of it when idle so I decided to add another 2gb of the same type.

Unfortunately it seems to be causing major instability, it crashes after 5 - 10 hours of operation. Sometimes its a blue screen with a memory reference error or other times it just hangs. It even crashed when running windows memory diagnostic tool.

Vista has its own built in memory diagnostic tool with any two sticks it runs fine with no problems it's only with 4 sticks that it crashes. When 2 sticks are installed it takes about 15 mins, when 4 sticks are installed the farthest it's gone is 25% complete then it just hangs for hours. There is a note down the bottom which warns that it might look like it is hanging when its actually preforming tests but i left it for 3 hours and it never moved past 25% and the keyboard became unresponsive.

I checked my BIOS settings and it's running at 1.85 volts with a shutoff max at 2.2 and a shutoff min of 1.5. Clock speed is set to Auto and its selected 800, and memory timings are 5-5-5-15 when the memory is certified to 4-4-4-15.

I am aware that 32-bit os can only reference 4gb's of memory in total due to the limitations of 32-bit memory reference. But I understand that the surplus memory should just remain idle and not cause it to crash.

Is it a problem with Windows or the motherboard? I made sure to reset the CMOS every time changed the configuration. Maybe its the DIMM 2 & 4 slots on my motherboard I don't know.

My system specs are as follows:-

Motherboard - Abit IN9 32X-MAX Wi-Fi
CPU - Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700
GPU - Point of View GeForce 8800GTX
RAM - 4x 1024mb pc-6400 OZC Platinum rev-2
OS - Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit

Any help would be appreciated.

Firstly, you need to make sure that your 2 new sticks of RAM are not faulty. So take out your existing 2 sticks and replace with the new ones, and run memtest on those to make sure they are good.

If that is fine, then try seating 2 sticks of RAM into the other coloured RAM slots to make sure that they are fine.

Im guessing though its the motherboard if its not a RAM issue, so go ahead and update the bios to the latest version.

Vista has a limitiation where after 3gb it will either hang or just BSOD. There is a hotfix available from microsoft that you need to get. Just search on on Vista and 4gb. The actual article says something like Vista and 3gb, but that's the right one and it contains a link to the hotfix.

You are lucky most get a BSOD right after installing the ram.

Vista doesn't have a limitation with 4GB RAM.

All 32 bit OS's can't address 4GB. Most simply report less, some crash.

Fact is you can only run 4GB Ram on a 64 bit OS.

If you need 4GB, then your only choice is to ask Microsoft for the 64 bit version of Vista that you are using. There's a "nominal" fee for which they will post you the disc.

You also need to check your motherboard compatability as many can't use 4GB ram or don't like certain sticks / combinations.

This does affect everyone but this hotfix usually solves the problem, on others machines its a setting on the MB that helps.

Install 2gb of ram, get the OS installed, apply the hotfix, then shutdown and install the other 2GB and if this is your issue you should have no problems. Most people I've talked with on this problem can either barely get into safe mode with all 4GB installed or can't get past installation.

Thanks for all the help, in the end I found that the default voltage of 1.85 was too low for 4 sticks. I upped it to 2.00 and it works perfect now.
