How did this lady land a job that had anything to do with computers? I get calls from clueless people all the time but i think the guy did a good job staying patient with her.

computer literacy test for new employees?

I propose a simple computer knowledge quiz with every private computer purchase. The OS will the adjust.

But that's a lot of work.

Oh my god... i experience conversations like this on a regular basis as a computer technician and tech support specialist... drives me insane. So i switched to using remote assistance where i can... People have no clue, but its not their fault. I find it humorous to some degree. "if i turn my monitor on"...........................
lol
This guy gets props here!

I couldn't imagine being that stupid. It just blows my mind.

It's one thing being horrible with computers, I can ALMOST understand that the phonecall was made. The fact that it took 5 MINUTES TO SORT OUT just... I just don't even know. Lmao

I think a considerable amount of piracy happens because of this, because computer illiterates just take things for granted and assume that the interwebs is supposed to work so and just keep downloading stuff just because is there.

Personally I think the tech support guy was a bit too indirect and inadvertently rude. I've been helping people of all levels over the phone for over a decade, and this whole situation could have been taken care of very simply by jumping directly to walking the woman through opening a different page. It's also important to use the same terminology that the the client/customer is using, else they won't know what the heck you're talking about.

The tech support guy was terrible. He didn't relate to her in a way that made sense to her. After all, she didn't need to pass any tests to buy the computer, he should have had to prove he was capable of technical support. He failed at it badly.

Oh wow. I don't even understand the source of the problem. Pac Man didn't make noise unless you clicked on it. How do you use Firefox for more than a day (or 15 seconds for a lot of people) without learning to close tabs? In a way I feel for her. To be that computer illiterate must be constantly frustrating. I remember when I didn't know about computers and how daunting it was to learn. She sounded like she hardly knew what her computer looked like. "Are you using Firefox?" "I would assume so." ...Yikes. It's this kind of thing that makes me scared to take a job at a help desk. I'm not sure I'm up to it!

It reeealy sounded like the woman was hi...

I though the helpdesk would ask "What ya tryin' 'coz this sh1t is strong..."

Either that or she is v. slow...

We actually had a similar issue at my job, a lady has two tabs open at the same time one Bank of America and one Google.com and she kept saying she heard sirens going off whenever she went to log into the Bank of America site and called them complaining about it once they said it wasn't their problem she called us, we walked over there and we saw that google was open and closed it she was like where did the noise go? We told her about the pacman google thing and she felt bad, but it was still kind of funny...
