Question VR GPU - GTX 1060 6Gb, GTX 1070 or RTX 2060

Hi,

I'm looking to get into VR with a Lenovo Explorer HMD. I home built my system back in 2012:

i7 3770 (non K) on a Z77 Mobo
32 gb RAM DDR3
120Gb SSD Windows bootable
1TB SSD
2 x 2 TB HDD 7200RPM in Raid 0
GTX 650 1 GB (I know. . wasn't even great in 2012!)

In the future I'll upgrade the CPU/mobo/RAM but right now I'm looking to upgrade the GPU.

The obvious options are:

GTX 1060 6Gb £214.99 ($279)

Whilst the 1060 is the least expensive it's price/performance ratio (price/bench tests fps) on pancake games is the worst. The 2060 and 1070 have similar price performance ratio to each other. Whilst I'm only really interested in VR (not pancake games) I guess these bench marks give a good overall idea of performance for comparison.

Sooo, I'm thinking the RTX 2060 would probably be the best buy for longevity for VR as it is the newest and is less than £100 more than the 1060. I appreciate the 3770 may well bottleneck the 2060 (or maybe not looking at some youtube tests) but it'd be a card that'll still be current to move to a new Mobo in a year or two. I'd be interested to know what others think.

Well, it really depends on what kind of experience you want out of VR and if you can afford better GPUs. If you can afford RTX 2060 then go for it since out of the three, it would give the best experience. And while GTX 1070 and RTX 2060 have similar performance, RTX GPU supports ray tracing and that can be beneficial when ray tracing eventually makes it's way into VR games as well.

Thanks Aeacus, that confirms my thoughts. Seems if I'm gonna upgrade the extra £99 for a 2060 over a 1060 prob makes a lot of sense altho may be not to my bank balance!

I would look at your CPU pretty soon. Because the 1070 already creates about 9% of bottleneck (at around 10 it becomes a real bottleneck) so I don't know how the 2060 would handle
But the RTX 2060 is definitely the best choice You could also look into the 1660TI which also comes VR Ready and is a just released budget GPU.

Thanks, the cpu, mobo etc is next on the list. And the 2060 sounds like it'll be a good investment for a future cpu upgrade.

Diff between GTX 1660 Ti and RTX 2060 is that GTX GPU has weaker performance than RTX GPU. Also, GTX 1660 Ti doesn't have Tensor cores and it doesn't support ray tracing.

Thanks for the info. The 1660 certainly looks a potential alternative.
