W2k standby

My system PIII 1.0 GHz 1.0 GRAM Windows 2000 pro will not go to standby nor will hibernate. It will hang and freeze at the Window is shoting down screen.
It did work in past. Have not loaded anything new.
Can somewone help?

what have you done to your system since it worked?
what kinds of issues are displayed in the event viewer?
(should be something there to see after you reboot from a crash)
also check the dr watson log.
