Face palm, I remember when I bought my Patriot 4GB G series DDR3 1600 for $120 2 years ago... Now it's only $25. All good though, got a Kingston 8GB DDR3 1600 limited edition from the Egg the other day for 49 bucks 😀

I have - I've hit 4.54 GB used, but that was when my CPU was maxed out on video transcoding. Currently have 8 GB, and see no reason to upgrade in the near future (esp. because I was dumb and bought 2GB DIMMs - my board is full 😛)
 
I already have 12GB DDR3 in this machine, is there anything I can really do with 24GB?

Only thing I can think of would be creating a big RAM disk and just messing with it. I currently struggle to fill more than 8 GB as is.

What other cool things can you do with a huge amount of RAM?
 
Unless you're using a lot of apps at once or doing CAD, video editing or similar, 8 GB. is enough for most folks. It's also worth noting that when using all four or six RAM slots most mobos lock the RAM speed at the CPU default specified RAM frequency so OC'ing of the RAM is impossible.

$55 for 12GB DDR3 triplet at local Fry's last week. Yes, prices are going down fast.

More ram means it is possible to run more virtual machines (at least 1GB per machine). Great news for testing and complex development environments. Virtual database servers will not have to be taxed with anything else.

Using it all up with a single video editing/rendering application may not be easy, but it's nice to have more ram "just in case" :)

You have obviously never edited anything like 1080p30 h.264 footage (or higher) because I easily hit 6+ GB usage right off the bat if I don't render my files beforehand (waste of time and disk space).
 
i want a 24gb system, well really i want a hell of allot more, but thats not going to happen.

id partition in 3 ways
8gb system
8gb page file
8gb scratch disc

if i could put more, i woulds add it to scratch disc, and whenever i am working with files, id copy them to the scratch disc, not move them, but copy them, i mean what do they read at 4-8gb per second?
 
Time to look for 4x4GB DDR3 1600 kits for my main rig :sol:

If I own a DDR3 1333 MHz module, should I sell it and buy 2 x 4 GB or simply get another 2 GB module? Right now it's enough for 300+ tabs in Firefox and a virtual machine (with 768 MB RAM), which apparently I can't use while Firefox is running. Doesn't bother me. Maybe if I cut down on the tabs... Hmmm...

2 GB is enough for me. I only play older games and as long as it can run HD content, I'm golden.
 
Yeah, yeah, yeah, 640k will be enough for the foreseeable future. We've all heard it before.

Get 16G while you can. Run 8 and setup an 8G RAM drive to run your swap file and temp folders on. Boot from an SSD and you'll SCREAM through everything. 😉

How many virtual pc do you have to run? You should have stick with WinXP and save your self a hassle of incompatibility. I think upgrading to win7 when you use a ton of a winxp software is ridiculous, if that is the case. If not well go ahead and get 32GB if that is going to make you happy. I save up and get another SSD to expand my RAID 0.

In conclusion, I'm sure that upgrading from 8 to 16 or 1600 to 2000 won't make a ANY noticeable difference. I did not notice any difference when upg from 4 to 8...oh wait the only difference I noticed was the usage meter dropped from 44% to 22% ;D

Lekko, when DDR4 or strait DDR5 comes up we can all play domino with DDR3s...or in my case DDR2 stiks :) How cool is that 😀
 
I bought 4GB for my last rig (c2duo, 9800GT), and thought it was plenty, and still is plenty for most applications. However, I recently got an HD video camera and it is a total game changer. Previous SD projects, and small 720P projects only tapped about 3GB of memory, but when I imported my 1080p video into the project I watched in awe as all 4GB of memory filled up, and then it almost capped out my virtual memory as well. 16GB will be the minimum on my upgrade to ivy bridge!

Not true in my case...i bought 2x1GB initially, then another GB then finally added a fourth. No probs so far. Survived all Sandra lite benchmarks, Crysis 2, MW 2, and more. The 3GB even got through memtest.

Could be a prob for others though, or the companies are simply bull-s-h-double t-ing.
