Right now I am using a 1050x1680 monitor which isn't that different from a 1080p but Im getting a GTX 960 4gb for my bday and its supposed to be really good for large displays. So this leads me to the question, do I get a 1080p this year or wait to get a 1440p?

the 960 wont handle 1440p very well at high settings. if you could i would try to get a 970 or a 290x then wait for 1440p

Depends on the game. At 1440p ultra settings you'll still get 100+ fps on a gtx960 if playing WoW or mine craft etc, same with skyrim. If you go into the heavily detailed games like bf4 etc, that'll change and you'll be getting 30-40 on high at best.

For best all around performance for a gtx960 it's best to stick to a 23" or 24" 60Hz 1080p monitor, which Asus makes a decent few at really good prices.

then see if you can grab a 290/290x, their very close in price of the 960 4gb but perform much better

Get the GTX 960 2GB, not the 4GB! The 4GB is a marketing trick, the GTX 960 can't actually make use of the given 4GB VRAM and 2GB remains to be the ideal VRAM size for the GTX 960

In short, the GTX 960 4GB is a waste of money. Get the GTX 960 2GB which will perform the same and spend the rest of your money on a better monitor.

A 600w power supply should easily handle an r9 290, which is very comparable in price to the gtx 960 4gb, but will perform much better.

Note I said 290 and not 290x.

I would also recommend an r9 285 before any 960.

I don't think you understand this subject well.

4GB doesn't mean It's better.

They put 4GB on the GTX 960 for marketing. It is actually the same as the GTX 960 2GB.

The 128-bit memory bus of the GTX 960 is too small to make use of 4GB.

They just put it 4GB and increased the price tag.

The GTX 960 2GB is a very good GPU even though It's 2GB. Quite a bit better than the 660.

The GTX 960 2GB will still handle most games coming out for the next 3 years very well. Games that need more than 2GB doesn't mean the GTX 960 will be bad with those games. It should still run very well.

Your options for higher than 2GB:
R9 280X
R9 290
GTX 970

Typically more expensive.
