I am planing on buying and building a new pc here in the next few months, I'm doing my research and have an idea of what i want i just have to wait and see what is on sale when i actually go to buy the parts. my main question to you guys is should i wait and buy windows 10 when it comes out or iv read a few things that if you have windows 7 or 8.1 they will upgrade it to windows 10 for free. i can find a windows 7 key online for about $40. What should i do?

thank you all in advance.

Solution

For 1 year after release, anyone with Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free.
It will NOT automagically disable itself after one year. It will, according to current statements, work forever.
After that one year...if you want Windows 10, you must purchase it.

Do not buy "a windows 7 key online for about $40". That is NOT a valid OS license. At all.
It costs what it costs...around $100.
If you see it significantly cheaper, it is NOT legit.

A legit Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 install will be able to be upgraded to Windows 10 within the first year. After that, you have to actually buy it.

On multiple levels, that's not the way it will work.

Not sure what you're trying to say here.
We (or at least *I*) don't 'ignore'....but rather inform a potential buyer of the possible/probable fail modes of buying licensed software from alternate channels.

What specifically? PM me, if you wish.

Pirate copies work 100% of the time and cost zero dollars. They're also not valid Windows licenses at all. The ones being sold on eBay aren't any more valid than a pirate copy.

People buying these are giving 40 bucks to some con artist for something that is no different to a pirate copy they could have got for free.

If you want Windows, pay the standard price - nowhere has a proper license for significantly less.

In any case, a $40 Windows OS is no more 'legit' than a $40 new, current gen, i5 CPU is.

These type of 'sales' are:
1. Academic, TechNet, or MSDN licenses. Which the seller is not authorized to sell.
2. Bought, in bulk, with stolen credit cards.

The OS costs what it costs. After the release of Win 8, MS no longer authorizes resellers to sell 'just a key' for Windows 7. Period.
Anywhere you see only the key for sale, it is not a legit purchase. And can become deactivated at any time.
Anywhere you see Windows 7 or 8 significantly cheaper than the major resellers (Aamazon, Newegg, TigerDirect), it is not legit.

I'm not sure why you're so keen to promote these cheap illegal copies of Windows.

People might feel that because they're giving money to someone that it's less illegal than downloading a pirate copy when it is exactly the same (i.e. completely illegal).

It is no less prone to crashing or compatibility issues either.

Just spend the extra money and buy a proper copy of Windows. You're getting a free upgrade to the brand new version when it's released and, apparently, they are going to continue to update 10 rather than release new versions so you're getting a high quality OS for a very long time. It's not exactly a bad deal.

Whether or not to buy a proper copy of Windows 7 or 8 now or wait til 10 is released is a different matter, though.

Will Windows 10's retail price be cheaper because of the free upgrade being given to people? Will it be more expensive than Windows 8 currently is? I'd imagine that if it is more expensive then retailers will also up the price of their Windows 8.

It's all a gamble now really. I'm planning on building a new PC for my brother when Windows 10 comes out and am undecided whether to get 8 now or take the gamble on 10 being cheaper.

I can't see it being more than a $10 or $15 difference either way.

Guys, I have same question, but I have one doubt to which I cannot find answer.

Case scenario: I buy windows 8.1 now. After Win 10 comes out, I upgrade to it. For free. Nice.

Now - 1 year after, win 10 upgrade is not free, yes? Then question - if after a year I will need clean install due my windows is trashed/infected/broken and whatever could happen to them - what then? I wipe out my windows, and only CD I have is win 8.1. I install them and want to do upgrade... BUT - its year after release - so its paid.

Only way out I see is to do full system backup on day 1 of installation, but I like clean wipe out instead of backup recovery, cause recovery usually doesn't resolves "deep" issues within windows.

What do you think?

One more question - why you say that windows on ebay all are not legit? For example, if its retail version box, with original CD's and box and code, why I cannot buy it and you say it is not legal? Retail version is used for one PC in one time, but you can use on multiple PC's, only not in same time. So you can resale it.

You will be able to create your own installation DVD. Reinstall whenever you need.

When you do the free upgrade you'll be given a Windows 10 serial - that's the important part. You'll be able to download the install disc as an iso any time. Or you could just keep the first one you use.

Re: eBay, we're not talking about some guy selling his own copy of Windows that he no longer wants; there are people who illegally sell loads of serial numbers on eBay for reduced prices via various illegal means. As has been pointed out, if there's much of a price difference from the standard then it's almost definitely as illegitimate as a pirate copy

Semantics:
Remove 'illegal', add 'Copyright infringement'.

Possibly in question, but unless the copyright laws have actually changed...whatever the license is that you agreed to when using the software is it.
