honestly, this *might* work out better for everyone. if MS isnt paying the licensing fees theres a higher chance they can lower the price of the operating system just that much more (in order to help push sales and have a higher market share.)

in all reality, we can do what we want on the operating system, including dvd playback. as mentioned it just takes a piece of 3rd party software, which doesnt cost us a dime more. who uses the built in software anyway?

im all for it.

A decision that will both increase piracy, and reduce optical media sales... maybe the MPAA should have been nice and just given Microsoft the decoder licensing for FREE.

Makes sense if no one uses wmp anymore. I haven't for a long time, there are plenty of other good 3rd party solutions out there so why should MS try to compete with them, since programs for playback are always included on new PC's, and most drives come with software to do the same thing. If I want to watch a movie I use the player in my living room or my game console. This may or may not be in response to the MPAA who knows. But if it saves them money this could lower the price for Win 8 although I will not buy the new OS.

Why beat around the bush! They should just come out and say "look, we've been lobbied to the bones and we are tired of it so we caved (again)." That's that. I haven't bought a DVD in over 6 years, and never paid for a bluray disk, and yet I enjoy real 1080p HD movies on a daily basis. Who the hell cares what Windows supports out of the box anyways? Pirate Bay, MPC-HC and Wild Media Server (I paid for the license, eat your greedy heart our Hollywood), a DLNA capable TV/receiver and you're all set!!!

I don't have a tv, so the only way I watch movies is by using my pc. I have almost 50 blu rays. Oh, I forfot, nobody uses pc's for movies anymore. As long as MS don't remove drivers enabling optical media to be used, then I don't care if they drop support. I use PowerDVD for movies, and only wmp for music.

Having played with W8 for some time now; the only thing that makes me think twice about going back to 7 is how quick it is. No DVD playback is just another drop in the bucket of things I dislike about 8.

It would be interesting to see if peeps at microsoft actually read these articles. It would be interesting to hear what they think.

At this point people have already woken up to Microsoft's half-assed attempt to make a media player and have moved on to third-party alternatives that are far more reliable They should just bundle VLC with Windows and call it a day.

[citation][nom]pckitty4427[/nom]You can still install software from a DVD, right?[/citation]

I read that data in DVD format will still work.

oh god did i lol hard... lowering the cost of the os... best joke i ever heard.

Hollywood had argued for years that Windows was the Pandora's Box of digital evil.
No, that would be YouTube. It's not that hard to rip video/audio off of YouTube. Well, I guess now Google owns YouTube, so, it's not Microsoft's problem, it's Google's.

Just give me my Windows 8 with NO Media player please, I rather save that space for something useful. After VLC, all other media players have been rendered useless.

Are they saying it cannot play DVD movies or DVD discs? If its for movies, I could care less, if they are saying it straightup wont read DVDs(like for games) then they just made a terrible decision and lost a sale from me.
