I was wanting to upgrade some parts of my computer soon since some games are beginning to be hard to run for me (Black Ops 4 especially). I don't believe that I need to change my gpu but I was wandering if anybody could help in recommending anything I should look at before making any decisions since I don't want to get parts that may not be compatible. I was originally thinking about upgrading to 16gb of ram and possibly a different CPU, if really needed, but I don't know if that would require me to make any other changes first. Thanks for any possible help :)

My Build:
GeForce GTX 1070
i5-4690 CPU 3.5GHz
8gb ram
MSI H81M-E33

Thanks again for any help!

Solution
CPU and RAM would likely be your limiting factor in a lot of instances, but it's pretty hard to justify investing in an older platform.

With an H81 board, the best you could do would be a 4c/8t i7-4770 or i7-4790, but those still sell for $100-$150, minimum, used.

If you could sell your 4690 and get a 4770 or 4790 for a net cost of <$75, it probably makes sense. Adding RAM should be cheap enough if you look to the used market.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was thinking about getting a completely new motherboard after looking a bit more into the one that I have. I'm not sure what I would get but I am thinking about getting a new motherboard and RAM entirely then getting a new CPU at a later time when i have the extra funds. Thanks!

A new motherboard isn't going to help you hear.
Anything on the same socket, will be limited to the same CPU options.

Anything that supports newer CPUs, will not support your existing chip.

The additional RAM *may* help, but I'd be more inclined to look to the CPU, depending on the titles.

Are you monitoring CPU/RAM/GPU utilization in game? if so, what do they look like?
What titles do you play?

I mainly play Destiny 2 and a couple of my friends were wanting me to play Black Ops 4 with them for the new blackout mode. Problem is, I cant play the game much since I am constantly having stutters but not really fps issues, though I would think my fps would be higher. I have played while having task manager open to see what could be the problem and I always have 100% CPU usage and frequently high disk usage. My ram doesn't have much issue but I wasn't sure if having 16gb would help.

Then you'd benefit more from a CPU upgrade.

High disk usage is interesting though.
Is that also true at idle (ie before you start gaming?)..... Windows Updates can cause high disk usage and, while it's fixable.... I find a clean OS install to be the easiest/quickest route*.

*But I only have one game installed, and a pretty light OS all-round anyway... So easy for me to say.

Your 4 thread i5-4690 has a passmark rating of 7656. The single thread rating is 2215.

Your strongest upgrade for your motherboard will be the i7-4790K with 8 threads and a rating of 11183 and a single thread rating of 2530.
Your motherboard does not support overclocking the "K", but the stock speed is still plenty good.
One can be bought on ebay for perhaps $200.

If you are looking for even more, you are looking to a new gen ryzen or intel processor.
They will require a motherboard change as well as a change to DDR4 ram.

I don't have high disk usage in anything but BO4 and its only when i am in a game and not menus. I just did a system wipe today and all I have on my computer are those two games.
I was thinking that if I wanted to upgrade my CPU more then I would need a new motherboard and ram which I'm not against getting.
