I have an ABIT KR7A mobo in my rig with 512 MB of PC2100 DDRAM. What is the fastest RAM I can use in my mobo if I replace the current ram and upgrade to 1 GB or DDRAM? I use an AMD Athlon 1800+ CPU. Will I see any performance boost? Thanks.

Well, that board has the Via KT266a chipset, right? That only supports 266 FSB speed which is the PC2100 RAM you currently have... You may be able to tighten your memory timings some, but you really won't notice any real improvement with tighter timings.

You won't notice any difference at all going to 1 GB of RAM from your current 512.

Heres what the mfr of the mobo says:

"Supports up to 3GB of un-buffered DDR200/266 and 3.5GB of registered DDR200/266."

So I guess you are right? Cant use faster than PC2100? I guess its now time to buy a new mobo? What performance mobo can I get with a new AMD CPU for about $150 for the mobo?
I am running an AMD Athlon 1.8 now. Thanks.

There's no physical difference between DDR400/DDR333/DDR266/DDR200. If you use DDR400 with KT266A, it will work as DDR266.

Staying with an Athlon XP? If you liked your old ABIT board, then stay with ABIT... They make an NF7 board which uses the nForce2 Ultra-400 chipset. It'll use dual channel DDR400 and can clock the FSB to 200 MHz. and higher of you want to push it!

The NF7 is only like $80 including shipping at http://www.newegg.com. Make sure the board will fit in your case though...do they make Micro ATX NF7?
