Water cooling ... Some questions ;-)

Hi,
I want to build a water cooling rig, and be able to move them on my next rig, X58 mobo. I said that because I need some piece of hardware who will be durable and adaptable.
Questions ....

1) I read a lot about the pump and it's look like Danger Den are quite to stuff to go with . Get one with high header pressure and good gallons per hour flow should do the job. It is ok to think that or at least one pump will be really over the crowd.

2) T-line or reservoir , it's seem to be only the time to drain the air from the system will be longer with t-line.

3) Cpu block , for now a good one but not extreme will do the job. I read a lot on that and each people has a preference.
Maybe that's because they have that model , anyway, from your opinion witch one are ok in price and performance?

4) Tubing ... bah color is not my thing, and my tj-09 don't have a window. So can you tell me if there are all the same or not, I will go for 1/2 tubing

5) Radiator , it will be a 3 X 120 mm fan high flow rad, like black ice extreme. Can you know one leading the rad part?

6) fitting ... da... there a lot of that I will sort that when I be there. If you know some better then the other let me know

I know this post is quite long but after all my reading I'm more confuse then before...

First off, there are major stickies to assist you, google and the search option here should help you.

Second, Swiftech and Dangerden run neck and neck, I am partial to swifty, as I run a 350 pump and an apogee GT block on my cpu. Need to upgrade to the GTZ for my quad, but there it is.

I run Koolance blocks on both my GTX 260's, and use tubing from Home Depot.

I just finished building a watercooling rig for my x38 board. (ASUS Maximus Extreme)

here's what I have:

- Swiftech Apogee GTZ CPU waterblock
- MCP655 - variable speed pump
- Feser X-Changer Dual 120mm Xtreme Performance Radiator
- MIPS Northbridge waterblock
- EK Max-ex Southbridge waterblock

So I'm cooling the CPU, Norgthbridge and Southbridge all with 2x120mm radiator. Temperatures compared to aircooled dropped 15 degrees for the CPU and 12 degrees for the NB and SB.

Lots of people here can help...also check out overclocking sites...much more info...http://www.xtremesystems.org is great for info/advice. (although it seems down right now)
 
Danger Den doesn't make pumps. The Laing D5 and DD3.2 are sold at many retailers, most of them have both them as OEM rebadged.

Fuzion V2 or the GTZ, CPU block taken care of.

1/2" quality, Tygon 3803 I think it is. Get at least 10 ft, a CPU loop uses about 5-6 ft, mistakes happen.

The BIX rads need LOUD fans. Why buy that when a Swiftech MCR or Thermochill or Fesser do about the same at MUCH lower noise levels. The MCR are the best bang for the buck.

Clamps, liquid, barbs, fan brands, mounting, filling, bleeding are your next things.

My standard noob cut n paste, spend some time reading, your really on the right track.

I'll steer you to some more technical links, please spend a few days (DAYS) reading posts, searching, learning. Don't forget to look for your case with WC. Google your case and the word watercool or some combination of that. WC stuff is larger than you think, I know from experience. WC setups done right are awesome and almost silent.

Not much to add to the advice already given on the other points. For "GOOD" cpu blocks you can also look at the Fuzion v1 and the Swiftech Apogee GT. Both offer excellent price/performance right now and are at least $20 leass than the v2 and the GTZ. But like with most things, as soon as you buy less you'll wish you'd bough more.

Tygon is considered "top of the line" and the price reflects that. I now go with MasterKleer. It's almost as flexible as Tygon, but cost significantly less. jab-tech.com has it for discount price for 10' or more for 7/16" ID. DON"T use the stuff from the locak home improvement store. mostly crap, IMO.

That pretty much sums everything up right there. Once you start to figure things out and that they aren't so cut and dry on how to set up a loop, you can get creative with what you want to do.

I am a bit of a Danger Den fanboy, but for the money, I like this kit:

1) I would probably get a D5 variable speed pump. (available with this kit)

2) This kit also comes with the "T" line parts. I like T lines for their simple and clean look. They do take longer to bleed; but thats not that big of a deal IMO.

3) This MC TDX block is nice. And yes I do say that cause I have one. Even if you dont get this kit, I recommend getting a good quad core CPU block right off the start. Doesn't cost much extra, and will allow for a hotter proc in the future.

4) Windowed or not, you want good tubing. The tubing helps make the seal to your fittings, and adds peice of mind. This kit comes with Tygon Laboratory Tubing which is good stuff. I like 1/2id, for most applications, and 3/8id in smaller cases or to make sharper bends without kinking the tube.

5) This kit comes with a Black Ice Extreme 3 radiator, which is an OK radiator. Black Ice rads typically work better with higher CFM (louder) fans. Thermochill and Feser radiators work better with lower CFM fans, and might be a good upgrade if you want a quieter system.

6) This kit also comes with Fat Boy fittings, and they work great. But, if you want more peace of mind, compression fittings are nice.

You can use heatercores; that works pretty well, but usually require some decent modding to get them working as well. By the time you buy those and the fittings, etc, to get them working, you might as well buy a PC rad and be done with it. I used a oil cooler from Summit Racing, and it worked ok, but I think it really lacked the ability to cool because the coolant flows too fast and there isn't a high enough temperature difference vs. the surface area of the tubing. Besides, I think the dual MCR320s will look cooler on the side, anyway. :)
 


I've ordered from several - jab, petras, performac-pcs, sidewinder, NCIX, etc - with much success. I prefer the one with the lowest cost at the time. 😀

Sorry to hi-jack this thread... but i can't find any information on the best waterblock for a quad core... is it Apogee GTZ or Fuzion V2... EK Supreme won't work as it is too restrictive
