Hi Guys,
I have just bought a WD My Passport 1TB USB 3 External Portable HDD and I can not get my PC to recognise it when plugged in to a USB 3 socket.

My mobo is an ASUS P8Z68-V LX with USB 3 sockets on rear. If I plug a USB 2 HDD in to a USB 3 socket, PC finds it within 2-3 seconds, If I plug my new WD HDD in to a USB 2 socket PC finds it.
But when I plug my WD HDD in to a USB 3 socket, PC makes the connection noise but doesn't find the drive.
I have re-installed the ASMedia USB 3 drivers from the mobo disk, but nothing happens. Same result with the latest USB 3 update.
Even the latest WD drivers do nothing.
I have tried updating the driver with device manager, tried adding HDD in Devices and Printers but I still can't get it to show when it's in a USB 3 socket.

PLEASE can someone shed some light on this, I am going crazy trying to figure this out.
I already have 1xUSB 2 HDD, now all I want is my USB 3 HDD to work.

If any more info is needed, just ask and I will post it,( if I have it).

Any and all help is greatfully recieved.
Thanks in advance to one and all.

Uninstall your current USB 3.0 drivers (that is, if you installed them)

Go to the website of your Mobo manufacturer and find your mobo. Go to the downloads section and find the proper USB 3.0 drivers.

When you install them, make sure NO USB devices are plugged in to them.

Restart, plug in a USB device to one of them and it should work
@tapper
HDD is portable, so no power cable and if I plug hdd in while pc is off, when I turn pc on it hangs after p.o.s.t. screen.

@ELMO
HDD does not show up at all in disk management.

All this only happens when the hdd is plugged into a usb 3 socket.
It works perfectly in a usb 2 socket, and my usb 2 hdd works great in the usb 3 socket.
I just can't get the usb 3 hdd to show up in the usb 3 socket.

My mobo bios is up to date, and all usb 3 drivers are current as well.

Hope that makes it a bit clearer.

I have 2 usb 3 sockets on the rear panel and none of them work with the usb 3 drive but both work perfectly with usb 2 devices.
I have even put a usb 3 extention lead in the usb 3 socket with a usb 2 hdd connected to the extention, this works. Looks to me like it has something to do with the ASMedia usb 3 drivers or controllers.

I don't have access to another usb 3 system, but there shouldn't be anything wrong with mine, I built it myself about 9 months ago.

I found a post on another site that said an overclocked mobo can stop a WD hdd working in usb 3 because they are sensitive to voltage change.
So I put my mobo back to stock speed and tried that, guess what ? Nothing
It also said to turn off usb 3 charging in bios, so I did, guess what ? Nothing
I've tried several settings combo's in bios but still can't get it to show up.

It does show up in device manager as a 'usb mass storage device' with that little yellow triangle warning. Tried updating drivers from there, tells me best drivers are already installed.

The most I get is the 'Device connected' sound, so that means something should show up somewhere, right.....no.

I'll give it a couple more days, if I can't get it working I will return it to the store and see about a different brand, but this time try to get it tested in a usb 3 system before I leave the store.

You are aware that a USB3 socket has a extra set of connections? One set for USB2 and another for USB3. If the USB 3 connectors are damaged then USB2 devices will still work. The USB3 connectors in the socket are vulnerable to being damaged by rough treatment.

Uninstall your current USB 3.0 drivers (that is, if you installed them)

Go to the website of your Mobo manufacturer and find your mobo. Go to the downloads section and find the proper USB 3.0 drivers.

Solution
I have solved the problem today.
While I was looking round my files this morning I found a link to a website (Station Drivers) containing, among other things, USB 3 drivers. Don't know where I got the link from but I'm glad I did.
I looked at the ASMedia 104 driver and it was newer than the one on the Asus website, so I downloaded and installed it.
Straight away I knew it was different cos when it had finished installing it said reboot required. It never said that with any of the other drivers I put in, all I got before was device ready.
After pc rebooted I plugged my WB USB 3 HDD into the USB 3 socket and to my supprise, IT FOUND IT.....YIPEEEE.
So in the end it was an out of date driver.
Driver version I used is ASMedia_USB_3_v1.16.2.0_for_Win_Xp/Vista/7/8_32/64Bits, if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the help anyway guys.

My WD USB 3 device stopped working in USB 3 some months ago. Tried everything. Just got a new rig with no less than 4 USB3 connectors. Same problem.

When I plug it into a 3 I see nothing. When I plug it into a 2 I get something saying the device is capable of performing faster if connected to USB 3.

If only.

@robie_65

I fixed my problem and now USB 3 drive now works in USB 3 socket.

I found it to be a dirver issue, the latest ASMedia usb 3 driver on the ASUS website (v1.14.3.0) is over 12 months old,
I found a later driver (v1.16.2.0) from October 2012 and that sorted everything out after a reboot.
The site I found the driver on is called STATION DRIVERS and the drivers full title is Asmedia ASM1041/ASM1042 USB3 Controller Driver

There are loads of other drivers there as well that might help you with other things
All the drivers I have looked at have been later than the ones on the official websites

Hope this helps and I hope you get your usb 3 working again.

Hi Sara, Sorry about the delay, I have been away for a few days.
I have done a bit of looking about for you and have found a Samsung Driver website that has a usb 3 driver (and quite a few others) for a NP530U4C.
The usb 3 driver is for windows 7 32 & 64 bit, there are other drivers for Win 7 and XP there as well.
Here is the link to the site and I hope this sorts your problem out, I know how frustrating it can get.

hi there,

i have a macbook pro and have been using my wd my passport external harddrive for almost 2 years now to store all of my stuff. i dont know why, but today when i plugged in the external harddrive, it makes whirling sound like its working but the icon that always shows up in my finder didn't show up but the external harddrive is still whirling. i'm not sure what went wrong or what i should do. it seems like i should download some kind of driver?

please help, i have all my important documents and photos on here 🙁

thanks,
z

Sorry for the delay zzhou but again I have been too busy with work.
I don't have a Macbook and have no idea how the drivers or kext things work on them.
If it is anything like windows it could have been an update that disabled a driver by trying to update it.
Sorry but other than that I can't help you.

[SOLUTION] (worked for me!)

I had the same problem as in this thread starter "ant247" for more than a year with no hope as i tried every possible solution mentioned to me.
did everything that was mentioned here as an answer to this problem but nothing worked...

then I used toothpicks to clean the socket connectors (with extreme caution!!) then blew air in the sockets as hard as i could...
the problem was gone !!!
it now works fine as USB 3.0 hard drive

Still a problem for some external drives... I tried to boost my WD My Passport through a usb 3.0 Boost feature of my ASUS ROG Gene mainboard and the drive became unrecognisable...

After downloading the latest Asmedia 3.0 drivers from the site above worked like a charm!

Only have to salvage my data from the broken disk now :/
