[SOLVED] WD Mycloud vs external harddrive connected to Router through USB?

I'm currently using a WD Mycloud, but the interface is clunky. I managed to set it up (and had to write down) so that everyone on my network can have a networkdrive to which they can back up their stuff. It's just that.. if something goes awry, I'll have to clue how to set up that WD Mycloud drive again.
Wouldn't an external drive connected to my router through the USB port work as well?

Any input GREATLY appreciated!

Make and model router?

On my Linksys WRT1900AC Router using the USB port to share a USB connected drive noticeably slowed my home network.

For the most part, stay with an Ethernet connection for shared storage.
