W00t Go Opera, i have been using the Opera Browser now for several years and it only gets better with time, and this here is a perfect example of why i use it. Good for Opera, they deserve this.

IMO Chrome is the best, used Firefox since v2.0 and got chrome a couple of months ago, can't go back. only use firefox when a website doesnt support chrome.

Opera's memory usage is because it stores all the opened tabs in its "Closed tabs" list which you can open without it loading anything from the net. If you clear the list after you close all those tabs it will probably be back to normal.
Maybe test who can reopen all 40 again hehe 😉

I tried Opera when the windows browser selector thingy came onto my screen and there is no looking back now ............. Opera Rocks

[citation][nom]lobsterm[/nom]Firefox = Firebug + noScript + AdBlock = best browser[/citation]

Opera = Opera + Opera + Opera = best browser? I don't know about your point.

1) Dragonfly and other included tools work well, especially sourceview's "Apply" button.
2) There's a good Blockit clone for Unite, or use the normal menus.
3) The fastest path is a prebuilt urlfilter.ini, such as "Fanboy's Adblock". Blocking is pattern-based and allows wildcards, so a small file can block most ads without slowing your PC.
x) Per-site preferences including language, pop-ups, scripts and redirection.

Symantec's security audit for 2009 was interesting. Internet Explorer was the most-attacked browser, while Firefox was second-most attacked and had almost FOUR TIMES the number of new security issues. Safari has almost 100 issue and Chrome had...45 or so? Opera nearly wasn't even on the radar with 25. But you should still have Antivirus software, I use ESET Smart Security on my netbook.

Of interest... the comment is made about Firefox's speed loading Facebook. I cannot get it to load Facebook properly on ANY computer... I use Safari, Chrome, IE8, and Firefox. I used to be a Firefox fan... but it has become BLOATED. Safari, and Chrome are all that will load Facebook for me... and IE but SLOWLY for IE. I have not tried Opera... yet. Sadly I am running an i7, with 8gb of mem, 1gb of vid mem, and a 8gb card dedicated to readyboost.... it is a pity any of these should be so slow... I am also on a wireless, n connection and getting a good connection. Please pardon spelling and grammar as I am BEAT

Interesting article, but not comprehensive.
You've checked the memory load, start-up time of vanilla versions.
But Opera has by default features that Firefox or Chrome only get with 10-20 addons (add blocker, java script, email client, torrent client, etc...)
There was no graph for what a browser can actually do from start

Firefox without addons is worse in real life then IE8. With, it consumes double the resources.
Maybe you'll account for this next time you test

One feature I REALLY like in Opera is it's built-in torrent client. Doesn't work quite as well as Bit-Torrent, but it sure speeds downloads, all the same. Chrome doesn't work well with some web-pages--especially those that are Flash-intensive. Only time I will use FF is when a page won't interact in Opera. I quit using FF when 2.9 or 3.0 crashed my Win2K desktop--I switched to then Opera 9.64, and have never looked back. Opera is what I use almost exclusively on my eMachine netbook as well.

I have been using Firefox 3.5.4 and installed Opera 10.60. N_o_w m_y b_r_o_w_s_i_n_g i_s s_l_o_w. Your mileage may vary; mine sucked for some reason. Tom's loads slowly, NYTimes loads slowly, everything loads slowly. For fun, I opened Firefox on the same site - faster loads.
Of course, this is just me.

Opera memory usage is even more outrageous than the benchmarks claims. Try to use over extended time and it hits 500-600 megs (on a 4 gig system) no problems.

Also don't give me, if you have 4 gigs of ram why not use it argument. Have you ever thought that users might need to run other programs at the same time and they require using ram also?

Also in Opera, you can't selectively disable plugins like all the other browsers. The only option they give you is to "disable all plugins" or "Enable all plugins." Most of the time I only need flash, so why does Opera force me to enable the other 10 plugins just to use flash. This makes Opera a huge security liability, and exacerbates Opera memory usage. This is an absolute deal breaker.

@WyomingKnott - When you first switch to a new browser, your pages aren't saved in the cache at all... of course it will be slower the first few times you load... Also, make sure you enable immediate page rendering, instead of 1sec refresh.

Dear FF user, i dont know what is adblock plugin for FF, but opera 10.60 has BUILT IN content blocker which let me block whatever pic / flash ads OF MY CHOICE thus saving me bandwith & page load time. Opera also has BUILT IN mouse gesture save me time & convenient no need to click back/forward/refresh button.
Btw do FF has option of clear cache on exit? Opera does

Things you can do with Opera... ya cant with IE8:

1 - Tell which tab is actually being used... all slightly differnt shades of color with IE. I have about 12 tabs opening, while typing this - I can clearly see which tab I'm on.

2 - Save your browser tabs... shut down, come back.. everything loads up again.

3 - Closing tabs... then bring them back when you go "oops!"

4 - Pull tabs off into their OWN window (for doing side by side)... and back again.

I'm starting to see Opera features show up in FF and Chrome... :)

Chrome is still stupid... its less than 2 years old yet they're up to version 5? You can't visually tell the difference between Chrome 2~5... Opera 10.60 is easily a bit different than 10.5x... which you can tell is different than 10.00.

I like a lot of things about Opera but there are just too many pages that it will not open, pages that I am using a lot. I like the community part of Opera and I like the widgets although FF does a better job with the add-ons.

I have used FF for several years now and for the most part am pretty satisfied with it. I have noticed with the latest iteration that there are some bugs with it that are showing up on occasion but it will still open all the pages and websites including the ones that Opera won't.

I have started using Chrome lately and I like it a lot. It doesn't seem as buggy as the latest iteration of FF is and I love the speed. Not so thrilled with the add-ons so far. I have not installed the adblock for Chrome although I saw in Slashdot last night that it is just about ready for release and that will be a big boost for Chrome. Right now I am switching between Chrome and FF most of the time.

I just wish Opera would finish adding the various add-ons that would let me open the rest of the pages I use a lot. What I find is that when I bring up these pages, Opera just stalls and does nothing. That is about the only problem I have with it. I also wish that Opera would display the temperatures on the main screen instead of on a separate widget screen.

While I like a lot of what you tested here, I think you are missing the usability of the browsers and that is the major determinant in which browser I use. It is also why Opera will not now nor in the near future be my main browser.

Some of the scales on the graphs are misleading, especially in looking at the FPS benchmarks. not having a 0 on the y axis makes it appear the lowest scoring browser fared much worse than it did. Also, there is an error at the bottom of the html5 section where chrome is declared the winner in comparison to IE, rather than firefox in that benchmark.

I'm a heavy internet browser. Almost I browse net for around 8-10 hrs for various kind of jobs I do. I don't know what's these many screams about Opera & Chrome all over the net. Chrome is one of the worst browser if test for usability. The same holds good for Opera. Reading these kinds of reviews I've tried using it but disappointed. So after using various browsers I stick on to Mozilla Firefox or the browsers which are developed based on Mozilla Firefox like Flock, Wyzo, Epic (India centric Browser) etc. I find it very irritating to use chrome or opera browsers.

I have had to abandon Firefox after years of use because it seems to leak memory. I can leave it open on a website for a few hours and the footprint gets larger and larger over time, eventually consuming the whole of RAM. Though I've always felt the world did not need yet another browser, I've switched to Chrome. Firefox has become a buggy memory hog.

Save a MHT site. Safari, Firefox (without add-ons), Chrome: IMPOSSIBLE. M$ IE - extremely slow.

Open 50 -100 tabs, then crash the machine any & every way you can. Which gets you back to your tabs?

Without add-ons, which browser remembers your personal details, blocks ads, lets you tell other sites that you are Firefox, IE or Opera, as the site demands?

Most people do not know what a quality browser is: operates on most operating systems: Symbian, Android, Windows, Linux, etc. the only non-crippleware browser comparable to Opera is Seahorse (Mozilla based).

Not sure why so many people are ignorant of these facts. BTW: I have no connection to Opera, & have never in all my decades paid them a single cent. So, effectively, it has always been freeware.

Interesting... and somewhat surprising. I'm still sticking with ff though. Last time I used chrome it wouldn't load everything on the pages at ff does. For example, on chrome ebay doesn't have an editor like ff does but maybe that's just a design thing. I wish FF had a minimalist design like chrome... Thanks for the article!

Hi toms,
Why don't you add the new Indie EPIC Browser to the test.
Just give us a review at least.
Heres the link http://www.epicbrowser.com/

Opera has a built in AD Blocker I haven't seen an Ad in months. You copy the address of the AD and put in the blocked content under advanced>content. There is a Web of trust Javascript, a Flashblocker Javascript, and one made to use Adsweep. Editing settings has it handle .Torrent links and Downloads Azureus/Free Download Manager respectively.

Site logins are handled flawlessly by simply clicking the Key in the address bar.

Opera probably has a Stigma attached to it from previous versions....but you gotta give Opera 10.70 a try and learn to set it up the way you like, you won't be sorry.

I THINK Firefox 4.0 (BETA) and Opera 10.60 are the Best...

That's just my Opinion
