webcam detecting movements

After having burglars in my home I thought about having a webcam taking images. I would like the camera only to take images when something moves.

It would be nice if the camera detected movements itself instead of software in the computer checking if the images changed.
By that you could have a computer running without any diskactivities unless the camera starts detecting.

Any input, links etc. are welcome as well as stories from projects done that both worked or failed.
