Hey guys. I am planning to make my own dedicated server. But I am new to the Xeon family you can say.
I have a few questions:

Which is the best processor for my purpose (price not an issue), one which should perform the best even if it costs less.
Also if I should choose Xeon or Core based processors

Also which drives should I use, I was thinking WD Caviar Black? Or any other which are most reliable can please can you make suggestions ( I am planning on a drive pool of 12TB)

I will be using a RAID Controller, I personally thought of using RAID 6, and also can you suggest which RAID Controller Card I should use? I would have around 6 drives at most. And should I go RAID 6 or some other configuration?

Also which motherboard will best fit my needs.

Also RAM choice, which RAm and how much should I use

I want best performance and reliability. Also if possible I can operate and control the system remotely or any such feature would be a welcome.

please help me out I am really confused as I am new to all this Server System.
 
If budget is not an issue have you considered looking at Servers from the big vendors like Dell and HP, as they have a large selection of systems with anything from low power to ultra high performance.
Their systems are usually designed for redundancy and expandability.
Plus they have things like the lights out remote management features.

I only suggest this as it's hard to build a decent redundant server with remote management features usually cause the parts are just not easy to come by.
By all means if you can find the parts build one.
 
I know they have quite an assortment of servers but sadly I live in a country where their branded editions are not available nor their services. But individual products are available after searching through for days.

Thats why I desired to create my own server.If possible suggest components I can use
 


Go with a SuperMicro Bare bones chassis (hopefully these are available) and put in your own gear. I highly reccommend their servers. a X3430 intel xeon is an extreme value, if your going dual xeon or you would like the option, then the much pricer X5660 6 core 1366 model.

I have installed and managed dozens of modern servers, highly recommended.
 


WD Caviar Black are decent drives but are technically consumer hardware. A couple of these in raid 0 . 4 drives in raid 5 or 10 certainly would be fine. The beefier route with significantly less IO performance impact in raid will be to go with a LSI 9240 hardware raid card and 2 seagate SAS hard drives, which is definitely the premium way to build a server. It really depends on how powerful this server needs to be, But definitely consider those options. I have deployed medium duty servers with caviar blacks in raid 0, everything seems to be running fine, but I definitely notice the IO and rotational latency involved with those drives at the higher end of the spectrum, issues i don't have running hardware raid with 15k RPM SAS drives.

For memory it doesn't matter that much, just make sure your using ECC memory with xeon processors. Kingston ValueRam thats ECC DDR3 1333 will work just fine.
 
Yes I agree, there is a lot at stake, and also a possibility. I doubt there is any available on rent :S. And also there are a few sites that are giving out dedicated servers, I thought you would only get say an IP and a CPanel kind of thing no? Or do they rent out entire hardware servers with Internet
 
What I know is that after creating a server, I need a high speed speed internet connection.
What I know software wise is that I would be needed LINUX and I cann create a CPanel have that I am just worried that the money would go down the drain :S
 
so you know about how to get customers, or rather how many you can get? and what they are willing to pay? what can you offer that is different from enom and other providers? cost? what about redundancy? you'll struggle there? how about burst capacity only, so that's not a problem?
 
Thats the question I wish to get answered. The thing is I want it to support say upto 1000 users per server if there would be 10 TB there would be around 10GB per customer and for that how much bandwidth I would require for supporting it. Per server
