Question Weird internet speeds ?

So im getting 90mb on a 500mb connection on all devices for the past 4 weeks, my ISP can not work out what is wrong , but last night by chance i did a speed check on my phone & i got 470mb, thought that was odd so i checked my PC which is hard wired and got 94mb, so i thought ill reseat the ethernet in the PC got no change so i reseat it in the router & got 515mb, woke up this morning and now im back at 94mb, i just reseat the Ethernet again and im back at 515mb again & 90mb on wifi, this is mega odd

im using the router the ISP provided, the hub 4.2 from Sky

  1. hmm its been 20 minutes since i reseated the ethernet and now im back to 93mb
also if i reset/turn off/on the router, browser will then say i must log in to an ISP to get the internet, while also getting the internet, wifi devices need to reconnect

It seems your PC is negotiating the speed at 100Mbps with the router.

Go to control panel and check the speed of the NIC.

Could be cable, could be ports (pins on pc port or pins on router port).

Sorry, wifi also capped? Then check the cable / port on the WAN side.

Around 94mbps or so is the number that almost always says there is a ethernet port running at 100mbps. The 90 or so mbps is how much data can be transmitted at on a 100mbps connection when you remove the extra overhead taken up by mac addresses. Since the packet size is not consistent but every packet contains the same size mac header you get slightly different numbers.

In your case since it also affects wifi this means it is likely the cable connected to the router wan port. '

Could be the cable just went bad or got damaged. The more common reason is the cable is a fake. There are many fake cables sold, those flat cables are the most common. You need nothing real special. Cat5e is fine but it must be pure copper wire with wire size 22-24

so are you talking about thet cable from the ONT to the Router yeah, im using the cable provided from the ISP, i did run a Ping in the CMD and got 0% loss

You would rather believe marketing from companies trying to sell you something ?

Cat7 was never fully certified because it provided no benefit over cat6a. Cat7 when used in a home environment can actually be worse than other cables. The metal shield in the cable can act as a antenna and get attract interfering signals. The reason it has metal ends is to connect to ground in the patch panels or equipment. Your equipment does not have the grounding to connect to the metal ends. In most cases you just spent more money than you should have because it has a bigger number.

In any case that cable is not your problem. It is the one between the ONT and the router. Even the very best cable can go bad. Just spend the $3 on a new cable and try it.

so Update, im now at 35Mbps, ive had a new router from ISP i changed the cable from ONT to router to Cat 5e i found out my PC is only 100/100 Speed, could be the cable changing that tomorrow, How ever the wifi speed is 35mbps, the BT openreach guy come out and we both got 400+ , 20 minutes after he left i did a check i was back down to 90mb 2 hours later, i messagedthe Openreach guy he did another reset and chack the speed again he said line was fine , my speed went up to 250mbps for 10 minutes and dropped to 35 again all on wifi 1 device connected
 
Game download speed does not count because game companies always throttle download speed,

Post results from speedtest.net and librespeed.org

and are you using any VPN?

35mbps is a very strange speed but if it is on wifi only then it could be some strangeness with wifi settings. 35mbps on ethernet would indicate some issue, likely with the ISP.
Ethernet cables only at full speed or run at zero. They can run at 1gbit or 100mbps...or zero mbps. So if software said it was 500mbps that would mean it runs at 1gbit for 5 seconds and 0gbits for 5 seconds for a 10second average rate of 500mbps. So the cable itself can not run at 35mbps.

It still appears as though you have bad cables in the path. It would be really nice if a ethernet cable would just completely fail when they are bad. It is not uncommon for them to work for a while and then when they get a bit warn the metal inside expands and disconnects. The cables can also move a tiny bit in the jacks which also causes some wires to lose contact. This can be very tricky to find. I tend to get frustrated toss all the cables in the trash and use new ones....unless they very long cables then I might spend the time to replace the ends.

Without rereading the entire thread can you just plug directly into the ONT. In theory at least if it function likes this then the same cable plugged into the wan port of the router so also be ok. You can never be 100% sure when you have a dodgy ethernet cable they can work on some devices and not others.

I suspect you best option is to buy a couple quality cat5e ethernet cables and just swap things out.
