Weird paasword failure issue

Greetings.

My XP Home system with SP2 was running fine until yesterday, and I
can't seem to find the culprit, as nothing has been installed or
removed, and the system still runs fine, except for this nagging issue.
On bootup, I am presented with a 'Welcome' screen that has two users
listed. Myself, an administrator account (which has a password), and my
room-mate's account (Which is a limited account with no password).

When I try to log into my password protected admin account, the system
refuses the password every time. Caps Lock is off, and I know I'm
typing it correctly. The hint is intact, and I know I haven't changed
the password. If I do the three finger salute twice, I get the older
W2K login prompt. If I change the user name to 'Administrator', and try
to log in with no password (I set one for that account, along with a
password reset disk), the fields dim out with only the cancel button
still active.

If I click cancel, I am returned to the Welcome screen with the system
waiting for me to enter the password for my usual admin acct, as if I
had already clicked on the name. If I enter the password now, the
system logs in normally.

Why is this happening, and what can I do to correct it?
Thanks for any help you can offer, it would be appreciated.

Have you checked for a virus? I had one do that to me a while back and had a
devil of a time getting it off.

Thanks for the tip.

I just updated my AV definitions (AVG Ant-Virus) and ran a full scan -
No positive results of infection.

Any other ideas?
