Hi,

New components
i3-12100F
Gigabyte H610M S2H V2 DDR4 - latest BIOS
8GB RAM
500GB Crucial MX sata SSD

256GB Intel NVMe SSD (second hand)
GT710 gpu (second hand)
Gigabyte 470W PSU (pretty old)

When installing Windows 10 or 11 on this system it gets to the select region and I click the region and the keyboard and then it loops back around to the region again, it sometimes this 4 or 5 times. Afetr it has done it a few times it 95% of the time restarts and then shows this window

One time it did continue to install Windows OK.

I have tried
  • New RAM
  • Using the new SATA SSD and an old NVMe SSD
  • A known good PSU
  • Using a different USB stick (I use both regularly and they are always ok on other PCs)
all with the same result.

I also got my old i5-3470 out and tried the Gigabyte PSU, GT710 and the SATA SSD and it installed Windows no problem at all.

Has anyone seen this behaviour before?
So to me that leaves the new CPU or new motherboard, and in my experience it's usually the motherboard, anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks

When installing Windows 10 or 11 on this system
Where did you source your installer for the OSes from?

In the BIOS, set your primary boot device to Windows Boot Manager if it's currently set to USB device/bootable USB device. Also disable USB boot override, if you see it in BIOS.

Gigabyte 470W PSU (pretty old)
How old is pretty old?

If it's this unit;

replace it immediately!

My advice is to get the Win 10/11 installer from Microsoft. Then download and install the Rufus utility. Use Rufus to format and create a USB install drive.

I got a bad USB drive from the Win 11 box. The one i made myself using Rufus worked like magic.

I've tried 2 different USB sticks that I use regularly to install Windows - both work fine on other systems
They worked on my i5 3470k with the same SSD today
ISO's downloaded from MS and installed on USB with Ventoy

It is that Odin PSU, but I still have the problem with another PSU

It boots from the SSD no probs just fails later in the install

I could try a different USB with only Win on, I doubt it will make any difference but will give it a go

I tried a different US with fresh Windows ISO from media creation tool, slightly different but ultimately the same
Got past the region after 4 clicks on next, asked for internet, restarted, entered username, did region 4 times again, said it wsa installing updates, restarted then back to the same screenshot as above

I thought I had it then.
I bought a GT1030 and used a different USB drive and Rufus to create W11 22H2 and it went further this time, I go to the enter in your username then it restarted on its own before I could type in a name.
The screen keeps flickering and doing weird things like blacking out part of the screen

As I'm typing this its gone from the "why did my PC restart" to the login screen with a user of defaultuser0 and an unknown password...
I tried to reset the password with Hirens but now when it restarts it goes back to the "why did my PC restart" screen.

I think it must be the PCIe slot on the mobo that is messing up the graphics card
