What AMD CPU and Gigagyte Motherboard - Help!

Hi Guys.
I need some major help here 😀

I am switching from INTEL to AMD so I am not into the AMD terms.

The motherboard listed below seems to be a good enough for my needs, not sure what NFORCE4 means, but somebody told me to make sure it was nforce4???

Possible CPU's

1. AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Soc 939 DUAL CORE $551.05
2. AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ Socket 939 CPU $455.50
3. AMD Athlon 64 3800+ CPU with Heatsink & Fan Retail Box $507.50

Prices are NZ dollars, just there as a reference point.

ANyway, couple questions please

1. Will all 3 CPU's work with this motherboard?
2. Can I use my exisitng AGP 6600 nvidia graphics card with this mboard?
3. Does this board have a built in graphics card? is that what the nforce4 is?
4. Why is the price of the none dual core cpu more than the dual core one? Faster but only one core? Any ideas?
5. Does 4200+ and 3800+ equal to 4.2Ghz and 3.8Ghz speeds like INTEL CPU's use?

Answer are:
1-yes
2-no
3-no
4- because it is clocked higher
5-Well, not quite. For dual core, definitively no. for single core, well, can be set as a reference point, but not always the case.

MHz are now an obsolete way of identifying CPU. AMD first stop using it. Now Intel is doing the same.

WOuld someone recomend something different?

I had this motherboard for 8 months and it was great. I sold it to a friend and he's quite happy with it.

I didnt try it with a dual core CPU but should work good. Maybe a BIOS update will be necesary, depend of the BIOS the board has.

This board has a nice feature.. passive chipset cooler! I'll never get a board with a chipset fan now that I've used quiet ones...

You'll need a PCI-e video card. Can I recommend the new ATI x1600xt. Good performance and quality display. The AVIVO feature enhence the signal sent to the TV or the monitor while playing video

Don't know if it is still the case, but RAID was set as default in BIOS for the SATA connector. If you plan on single drive, or not using RAID, don't forget to disable RAID for the connector that won't have the array.

Doing so, any SATA hdd connected will install without having to load driver.

Feeling a little dated now with technology, fell a little behind.

I will get a PCI-e graphics card then. WIll see if that card you recomended is available locally.

My 6600GT card will have to go to my TV/Internet PC then.

I currently have two 250 gig 7200 rpm IDE drives and one 80gig 7200rpm IDE drive.

C: = 80gig
D: = 250gig
E: = 250gig

Does this MBoard support my IDE drives?

yup. it will support them. it still has 2 IDE connector for 4 IDE devices

If the x1600xt is not available, the check for nvidia 6600GT card. Th x600 and x700 are slower than x1600xt and 6600gt nvidia video card.

I would go for an nvidia card. If your budget allows, you can pick up a 7800GT PCI-E for like 295. Here's a link. The rest of that build looks pretty good man. Good luck with it.
