So I was wondering what the difference is between the connections on the graphics card; it seems as though there is a PCI-e x1 slot at the top of the graphics card as well as the expected PCI-e x16 at the bottom of the graphics card. I do not know what the uses are for what seems to be a PCI-e x1 since it already contains a PCI-e x16.

I will be using the PCI-e x16 either way but I would like to learn about this so if someone could help it would be much appreciated.

Solution
The ones on top they are not PCI-e slots, they are used for SLI (connecting 2 or more cards together using the SLI bridge) The one on the bottom is for connecting the graphics card to the motherboard.
