What are the main difference between these CPUs?

What are the differences between i5 2500 and i5 4460? Does the 4460 give more FPS and less lag spikes? Any tips?

Think about USB 3.0 and SATA III and pci expansion slots, if you need any of these things. The newer CPU based system will have more support for newer standards, less support for older standards. Otherwise most of your money will go to the videocard, not the CPU, especially with prices today as they are.

Thank you, I am going to get the i5 4460 from a friend for free in few days. I own a i5 2500 right now. Just wanted to know if it is worth changing it.

If it is free, you can definitely get it. But remember, you have to get a compatible motherboard as well, as your current one will not support it.

2400 is 2nd gen and shares the same socket with 3rd gen. So you can get any 3rd gen. i5/i7 without changing the platform. But 4460 is 4th gen and different socket. It is socket 1150, not 1155.
