High end, though a better PSU would be recommended for the power-hungry 390 and the overclockable 4790K.

Why would a EVGA Supernova 650 80 plus gold G1 psu be an inadequate power supply for this set-up?

The G1 is a poorer EVGA model made by FSP , the newer G2 models are made by Super Flower, one of the best PSU producers right now. Basically the G1 series doesn't use as many high-quailty internal components. Still enough wattage, just not rated as highly.
