What causes SSD disk usage to spike to 100% on Win 10 lockup after a reboot?

On my Win 10 desktop my C: drive is a Mushkin Reactor 512GB SSD. When ever something goes wrong to cause my computer to completely lockup and I have to do a hard reboot when the computer boots up again the C: disk usage spikes to 100% and this goes on for over a half hour. I've never actually timed it so it could be longer.

Is Windows doing a file check or something similar when the disk usage spikes? When this spike occurs the PC is virtually unusable. If Windows is doing a disk check why can't we see the progress? With previous Windows versions the disk check happened before the PC finished starting Windows so we could see the progress.

I'm about to upgrade to a new PC build where I'm using an M.2 drive for my root drive. Is the new drive going to be susceptible to what ever is causing my current PC to experience this high disk usage?

To be frank, it could be any number of things. Everything from Windows doing system maintenance to a virus happily infesting your system. It could even be a continually failing windows update installation. But to help determine what is going on we'll need a few more details, can you provide your full system specs (including the PSU make, model and wattage) can you also have a look at what programs and applications are running at startup? A list of background processes will help too.

If you need help to find out the details just ask we'll try to help guide you! :)

Is there an easy way to generate a list of startup programs or background applications other than just taking a screenshot?

Just open Windows Task manager, and then select the Startup tab. That is the entire list of applications that load at startup.

You can run a command prompt with Administrator privileges and type in the following command tasklist > tasklist.txt

this will create a txt file called tasklist that contains the output of the command you ran. simply open the file and paste the contents. however tasklist will present a lot of services as svchost and wont necessarily name the actual program or service that actually is using the resources.

Yes, but I'm asking is there a way to generate a text list of those programs? There's 39 programs in the startup list and way more processes than that. I'm asking if there's an easy way to post that list or should I just take a screenshot?

There may be a command to print it, but I'm not aware of it. The only way that I've seen it posted on the forum is through a screen shot.

OK, here's the startup programs: https://imgur.com/a/HNI634a.

My hardware is:
i5-6600
Mushkin Reactor 512GB SSD C: drive
2x WD Blues
1x WD Black
Nvidia GTX 1050

The power supply I'm not 100% sure on, but it would have been the Corsair series that Best Buy sells and I think it was the RM series. I think the RMx series is the super quiet one and I know it wasn't that series (because I just bought one of those for my new build and I know the different in how they sounds). It would have been (most likely) 750 watt.

My AV is Bitdefender and it's up to date.

Here's the list of processes running:

The main problem that I see is that you have way too many apps loading at startup. And many have a high impact on startup.

To clean that up, select the apps with medium and high impact on startup and use the disable button at the bottom. Then go through the rest and disable all but the ones that you use every few days. This doesn't delete them it just stops them from running constantly.

I'm about to upgrade to a new PC build where I'm using an M.2 drive for my root drive. Is the new drive going to be susceptible to what ever is causing my current PC to experience this high disk usage?

The new drive would be susceptible to similar slowdowns at startup with a similar list of applications all loading at startup. But it would also be influenced by the new build processor and memory.

I agree with you about the startup apps. This build was done Dec 2015 so it's had a long time to build up clutter. But, the disk usage thing only happens when I have a hard crash and that's only happened 4 times since the first of the year. I only reboot about once a week, but even then it's still been rebooted many other times and the disk usage problem only happened those 4 or so times where I had a hard crash.

This is really an issue, as rare as it may be, of me just wanting to know what is going on with the HD on those rare times when I've crashed. If it's doing a disk check why can't I see the progress?

Typically the only thing that loads randomly at startup are Widows Updates. There are some that will force a restart. But most will accumulate until the next restart. Then those will load at the same time as the regular apps that are designated to load at startup. So you have both apps and updates loading and installing at the same time.

As I think about it there is another random element. That is browser windows that are open at the time of the restart. These browser windows are a big hog of memory resources. Depending upon how you have your browsers configured, that too could contribute to a slow startup if a bunch of windows are also trying to load.

When I restart Chrome after a reboot it doesn't reload all open tabs. It asks if I want to re-open those tabs. I can tell if I'm in a situation where the disk usage is about to go wild and will shut the browser down rather than even trying to do anything with it.
