[SOLVED] What CPU should I buy for fortnite 144fps?

I own a i5 4690 and recently bought a gtx 1660.
It all works quite well except for some moments where my fps drop down to 60-80 in like really busy fights. Also if I put textures from high to epic I have some fps drops to 20 or 40.

So my question is, is it really the cpu? if so which one should i buy? r5 3600? 2600? i5 9400f? i5 9600k?. is it worth to spend the money on i7 or r7? or even with those ill get some fps drops?
i had an i7-7700k for a few days but i had to rma it, i was getting above 90C on rocket league.. so im kinda afraid of new intels

I know I need to upgrade motherboard and ram, thats no problem.

Ryzen 5 3600 or I5 9400F or ryzen 5 2600 would be Great for 144 but also depending on your GPU

Personally I would get 16GB @3200mhz Ram, new mobo of any type and I would go with an 8700, 8700k or 9700k. That's my personal opinion but some people have very tight budgets

MSI B450 Tomahawk
2×8GB DDR4-3000 or faster

The motherboard won't support the CPU out of the box, but has MSI Flashback which will let you update the BIOS without a compatible CPU (see video).
Also, what PSU do you have, and have you run a full virus scan with Malwarebytes?
60+ FPS isn't bad, that's actually smooth (while 30FPS is considered a minimum).

Personally I’d pick Ryzen over an i5, Intel only makes sense now at i7-i9 level.

As for your 7700k what cooler did you use? It needs something far better than what a 4690 needs.

Nono, the game runs smooth as hell at 144fps (at some points it goes up to 300+), but at some points fps just drop heavily to 60 or 80 and it frames a lot. I was thinking its the cpu that got old, because usage is always like 90+%

hmm I dont really remember, it was like 2 years ago. I think it was a 212 hyper evo, but that cpu had to be burnt or something, rocket league and cs go with gtx1070 and it didnt run smooth. Thats why im afraid of those i7 and i9. I think ill have to go with ryzen.

I guess it must be that ram ddr3 running at 1600mhz xd or both the ram and the cpu.
I mean, i doubt the gtx1660 is not enough for fortnite (at those competitive settings). I'll run that msi afterburner and check it anyways. Thanks for all the help brother!

How much RAM do you have installed? Not enough ram might have more impact than the actual frequency of the ram, especially if your game run on a HDD, but even with a SSD, page filing kills performance.

I do have a samsung ssd and its 8gb of ram ddr3 i have. Can i fix it with 12 or 16? 😮

MSI Afterburner will show whether yes or no. If games are using around 8GB or more, then yes, getting another matching stick would help. Also, is it 1×8GB or 2×4GB?

There seems to a problem with the boost algorithm in all the older generation boards so that the chips will not hit the advertised boost clocks. It may be fixed in the future but not fixed as of now.

There are many things that can cause FPS drop in large areas, including CPU, GPU and yes, insufficient available RAM is definitely one of them. As other have mentioned, monitoring with MSI Afterburner should give you better answer. However, one thing about RAM, do not look only at RAM "used" but pay also attention at RAM "cached" or "standby" as even if you have only 4GB used but that the remaining 4GB are occupied with cached data, the computer WILL page file to free space and performance will suffer from it.

You should definetely try getting a 144hz monitor, the difference is insane! So smooth!
But depends much on settings. Are you playing all in ultra? Im doing 1080p with all low except for the view distance which is on epic and antialiasing on high (this is weird, everyone has it on low but i like the way you see the game when AA is on high settings).

a 144z monitor aesthetically to me looks aweful i dont want what looks like a gaming monitor i bought this monitor because it looks like a normal consumer monitor samsung c32f391 i had a few criteria that my new monitor has to meet. had to be at least 1080p (old monitor was a 720p 32 inch tv lol) had to be a actual monitor not a tv. had to be curved because i love the look. had to be 32 inches. and had to look normal. no gaming look type monitors. so until they change the looks i will be sticking with my 1080p plus coming from a 720p tv to this is a huge difference. lol i was actually considering on getting another and putting games on one monitor and things like web pages/ hardware monitoring etc on the other. but would need to switch out my desk mount for that so not yet. all stats are set to epic as for view distance it is set to epic only thing off is v sync

Ye its huge difference too between tv and monitor. And yeah im sure my 1660 cant handle those settings and still get 140fps

i was lucky when i was buying parts a couple weeks ago (when i bought this gpu) i had intended on buying a 1660ti but noticed in store when i went to get it that this rtx2060 was on sale and was now only 10 bucks more than the 1660ti. glad you know that with your setup on epic you wouldnt get 140 fps still strange why you are dropping so low tho.

I was testing with the afterburner and yeah its the cpu bottlenecking, most of the time 80-96% usage and gpu hardly hitting 40%. Only good thing is that cpu doesnt even hit 60c.
Ram seems to be enough, 5.1 - 5.7 Gb usage, overall it was like 60-70%.
Maybe with more threads should be enough? like upgrading it to a i7 4770k or something?

I would go with something like this. Unless the prices have come way down, on the used market, you are going to be overspending, on an i7 4770k/4790k.
