Yes. For a lot of years, that was the standard amount of cache. Then later as drives got bigger and faster, cache size went to 16 MB, then 32 MB.

What they call cache is a buffer that won't be used as a cache, never ever, and has no impact on performance because of that. Just take any one.

Buffer size increased because Ram chips aren't available any more in 8MB size (they were produced for 64MB Ram sticks), and to give buyers something easy to compare.
