hello

i am new to the computer world and i am hoping to move some of my sata ports around so i can put in a new graphics card. first off, i have no idea if i can do that without having to configure or reformat any of my drives. second off, when i check my hard drive properties, it says its in location bus 0 and my optical drive says location bus 2. i have no idea what that means. what does it mean? and am i able to move those sata ports before putting my new gpu in?

1) Yes, you can move SATA ports easily.
a) Shut down PC
b) Move connector on motherboard.

All connectors of the same COLOR use the same SATA controller. If you switch to a different color you may see different performance.

*In some cases if you switch color it might not boot as there are no drivers present in the boot environment. Worry about that only if boot fails.

2) BUS "0" etc...

In computers many things are numbered starting with ZERO not one. The computer sees a "SATA BUS" and keeps track of what's in each position.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by the last part. I've built plenty of PC's with only a single SATA controller that had FOUR connections and could move the OS drive between any one of them. In this context that would mean the OS drive worked in Port 0, 1, 2, or 3.
