What fps do you game at?

Hey I am just wondering what fps everyone games at. I hear people saying 30 fps is unacceptable but don't consoles run at 30 fps. IMO i cannot tell the difference between 30 fps and 60 fps. When I am gaming I choose better graphics at ~40fps then lower graphics at 60+ fps. I am wondering what your guys thoughts are on the sweet spot in terms of fps and graphics quality is and what fps you aim for?
 
You will never get a 100% answer. I have played with FPS limiters in Nvidia Inspector.

30 fps feels slow(but after you play it for a bit you just don't notice it as much any more) under certain games(FPS). 40 feels better, anything over about 50 does not seem make much of a difference on current LCD's , but if you have a 120Hz display, I can see more fps helping because it DID feel smoother on CRT screens.

Again, everyone is different. I would rather a solid 40-50 then a 100 down to 30 then back to 100 over and over. Its the drops that make it worse.

The video someone posted above looks like Interlaced VS non progressive to be honest.

@BigMack70, It is just strange with the interpolation some TV's do. makes it almost too smooth.
 
if they wont see it, they will definitely feel it as soon as they move the mouse themselves.
and turning vsync on with 40 fps is stupid imo. if you cant reach the Hz of your monitor turn it off.

btw, cs 1.6 with under 100 fps is a pain in the ass, though i admit there are also other things that come into play here.
 


vsync keeps the fps from going over your monitors refresh rate. Turning it on doesn't give you less fps so having it on or off at 40 fps doesn't make a difference. The reason i have it on is because i get tearing without it.
 

vsync WILL lower your FPS by some amount if it is on when you are lower than your vsync setting, adaptive vsync won't... That is the difference in the two.
 
The only game that I ever had issues running at a smooth framerate was Crysis. Every game before and since then I have run at 30-60+ fps. The human eye cannot see above 60hz or 60fps anyway. Yeah, most games on consoles run at 30 fps and movies run at 30 or even 24fps. 30 fps should be the lower limit of gameplay with anything over 60fps being useless.

Totally disagree. At 120 you just see everything, 60 is nice but 120 is better.
 


I just ran benchmarks keeping the fps under 60 with vertical refresh on and off and the results were the EXACT same
 
thats not even debatable. ofc vsync lowers your fps, since the gpu often has to wait until the next Hz.
EVERY benchmark will prove this. its kindergarten knowledge.
i admit that sometimes its better to turn it on, even if youre below your monitors Hz. some games just tend to have terrible tearing, some dont.


you probably turned vsync on and of in the game, while already having forced the option in your driver.
 


What happens, with the advent of triple buffering, which seems to be standard in Dx9 and newer games, is you'll get FPS at 80, 90, 83, 72 or what ever. Though the time between frames will end up being 1/60th of a second or 1/120th of a second. When the FPS is closer to 60, you'll have more 1/60th of a second frames, and as you near 120 FPS, you will have more 1/120th of a second frames.

Anyways, as I mentioned before, the main thing that causes me nausea, is the latency caused by lower FPS.

Also, I will lower settings to be able to get 80+ FPS. That is the point I stop feeling nausea.
 


While the last post corrected some things, the first post was mostly correct, and the general ideas were good.
 

Triple buffering is built into almost every game made today. The check box you do get is for OpenGL, because it is not default in OpenGL.
 


Yea 60 is nice ive tried gaming at 30 and its not the same and from seeing consoles with 30 fps im more happy bout gaming at 60 without any question
