What graphic to choose? (390, 390x, 970 or 980?

Hello forum!

I've been cruising around here and everywhere else trying to find out what would be the most futureproof and priceworthy buy graphic card wise and I just can't seem to narrow it down completely.

My specs right now are:

Asus Sabertooth p67
Intel core i5 2500k clocked to 3,8ghz
Corsair xms3 1600mhz 2x4gb
XFX Radeon HD 6950
Corsair GS600 - 600 watt psu

So! What I'm looking for (for now) is a GPU upgrade, at first my thoughts were going back and forth between the new R9 390 and GTX 970, after asking around a bit and looking around A LOT I decided that it was probably better to go for the 390 due to it looking more future proof.

But Now I know that my budget can stretch a bit higher if I want to and I decided that I can put the money out for either a 390x or a 980!

But which one is more smart there? It's kind of the same as the 390 vs 970 I guess.

The 980 is cooler, less power craving and clocks better.
The 390x got twice the vram, making it more future proof and is a tiny tiny bit cheaper here in sweden but it's also more power demanding (Not that I care about that as long as my PSU can handle it, which I think it can(?))

The main thing about my GPU upgrade is to get the most priceworthy and futureproof upgrade, that's why I decided that I can increase the budget IF it's actually worth it.

Is it really worth getting a 390x over a 390 or a 980 over a 970?

Right now I'm gaming on 1080p, I have no plans on getting a 4k screen but I might step up to 1444p(?) in the future. I'm not really playing any really intensive games but I would like to be able to. I also want the GPU to be ready for the coming VR products.

So!
The question is this: First of all, which pricerange should I put myself in? Is it worth spending more money and getting a 390x or a 980? In that case which one? Or should I just stay put with the 390?

Every answer is really appriciated and I hope answers can also help other people. I do recognize that there are simular topics out there but none of them really answered my problem.

Thank you!

If you're planning on doing some serious 1440p gaming, you should probably save for a nice 980ti or at least a 980. The extra 4gig on the 390x is kind of stupid really unless you're into some heavy 3D design and rendering.

Well I'm not really planning on doing any "serious" 1440p gaming so I think a 980ti is a bit overkill for me right now. You would suggest a 980 over a 390x? Would nice with some explanations to why! (I'm not saying I disagree with you)

Have the same gpu hd 6950 and decided to go with r9 390. 970 is better gpu (architecture and lower power consumption) if you ask me but lack full 4 gb of ram which will be of importance in near future. On the other side between 980 and r9 390x my choice would always be 980 which have full 4 gb of RAM, better architecture and low power consumption which means less heat and sound. 390x anyway will newer be capable to fully utilise it's 8 gb of RAM.

Hope it helps.

the 390x is a 290x with 8gb vram, which is useless

@AreH

It sure does help! I'm thinking about the same as you. It's either the 390 or the 980.

The purchase won't happen until August so I guess I'll just have to see what happens with price changes and other things like drivers etc. Maybe should save a bit for a new Cpu. Thanks!

@Akaiko

Glad to be of help. In next month I'm planning to buy gpu as a final part of my now almost a year old process of step by step pc building. It will probably be R9 390, 980 is too expensive, and I will notify you about my experience.

Best luck!
