Does anyone know if the announced PC port of San Francisco Rush ever got
released?

the original San Francisco Rush was a coin-op arcade game by Atari that
used a 200 MHz MIPS R5000 CPU and
3Dfx graphics chips: one PixelFX chip w/ 2 MB RAM + two TexelFX chips
w/ 4 MB RAM, on an Obsidian board.

this graphics configuration was a little better than a standard consumer
3Dfx Voodoo Graphics card (Voodoo 1) since the Obsidian board in the arcade
machine had the additional TexelFX chip and 2 MB RAM beyond what the
consumer Voodoo Graphics card had.

the entire arcade board (MIPS CPU + Obsidian board + memory + sound +
everything else)
was known as the Atari 'Flagstaff Hardware' - it powered the arcade San
Francisco Rush: Extreme Racing
and San Francisco Rush The Rock: Alcatraz Edition , games from 1996.

from there, the original San Francisco Rush was converted to the
Nintendo-64, and although it was a very decent console conversion, the
graphics were trimmed down noticably to be able to run on N64's slightly
weaker hardware (93 MHz MIPS R43xx, the 150K polygon/sec Reality
Co-Processor, and smaller amount of memory.)

-Then- there was supposed to be a PC port of San Francisco Rush - either the
original, or SF Rush The Rock
Alcatraz Edition, or perhaps both. It was to be ported for PCs with
consumer 3Dfx Voodoo cards, naturally, since the original arcade games used
somewhat beefed up Voodoo 1 technology. by the time the PC port would
have arrived, the Voodoo2 would have been out, giving PCs more graphics
capability than the SF Rush arcade games.

I dunno if V2 would have factored into a PC port of the V1-based SF Rush
games or not.

So, there's the background to refresh your memory.

can anyone tell me what actually happened to the PC version of San
Francisco Rush
and / or San Francisco Rush The Rock: Alcatraz Edition ?

I *vaguely* faintly recall reading that it had been released, but that it
was pretty obscure. if it came out at all.

Assuming it was obscurely released, if you've played it, any impressions on
how it compared to the original arcade ?

thanks in advance

I am fairly sure this came out on Dreamcast as we have a game of the same
name IIRC. It is only average, however, so this may explain the lack of PC
release?

the guy was talking about the oldest SF Rush games, and those never
came out on Dreamcast. What Dreamcast got was a port of SF Rush 2049,
a completely different game. it was a futuristic take on SF Rush. The
original SF Rush games looked modern but not futuristic like 2049.

Here is some info on the PC San Francisco Rush The Rock: Alcatraz
Edition - apparently released in 1998, but only for PCs with a
Quantum3D Raven board which used a 3Dfx Banshee chip.

(original SF Rush for PC that was meant to come out in 1997 was canned)

the first part of the information below is OLDER news (i.e. saying it
was for Voodoo2) then as plans finalized, it was announced that only
the Banshee-based
Obsidian Raven boards could play PC version, thus severely limiting the
number of people that could play the PC port of SF rush.

(From Operation 3DFX)
"Well we just learnt that San Francisco Rush has been pushed for a Q2
98 release or so, according to rumours it was being held back to
provide an arcade perfect translation for Voodoo 2, i'll let you know
if the story is true, i'm gettin in touch with Bria n Bruning and
Midway as we speak, so stay tuned."

"Got an answer from Brian Bruning regarding the delay:

Don't have a current status. I think things are being held up while
Midway/GT/Atari figure out the PC rights. Bummer when an awesome game
gets held up for non-technical issues!

Brian

There's still hope from Midway, as we're waiting for their reply on the
issue, so stay tuned..."

NEWS!

If you ever want to get San Francisco Rush: Alcatraz edition on your PC
you will have to buy the new Quantum Raven 2D/3D card based on the 3DFX
Voodoo Banshee chipset. So the game does exist on the PC but has code
to limit it to run on this card (not that it couldn't run on other 3D
hardware). You can find out more about this card at
http://www.quantum3d.com .

OLD News

(From Operation 3DFX)
UGP got an exclusive on the long awaited port for the pc, San Francisco
Rush:

Originally slated to be released last year by GT Interactive, San
Francisco Rush, the popular Midway arcade game which runs on 3Dfx's
Obsidian hardware has been canned for PC. Instead, its arcade sequel,
SF Rush: The Rock, will be ported to the PC this year by Midway itself.
The game will support 3Dfx graphic accelerators on the PC and will
allegedly be a carbon-copy of its arcade brother. SF Rush: The Rock
will also support up to eight players via LAN or Internet.

There's no release date confirmed yet, however UGP got information that
developement will begine once the GT Interactive issue is solved... "

Installation Instructions - ***It is recommended that you run this in Compatability mode for 98/ME. It fixes a few problems you might encounter! (really bright screen, wrong resolutions, etc) ***

1.) Mount image or burn disc. [have to burn disc to hear music... not sure if there is a work around]

2.) Copy files from "Cracked Exes" to installation directory overwriting existing files. This will bypass the hardware check. [Game originally required a 16MB Quantum3D Raven Videocard]

3.) Install the included glide wrapper [GlideWrapper084c.exe] if you don't already have one. [needed to emulate the Glide API that the Raven videocard used]

4.) Enjoy! :) [this works great with an xbox360 controller

Also people. is there any HOME network options for the pc version of rush???? That would be a dream come true.

This really is a awesome arcade conversion, i used that glidewrapper to max the graphics and it looks better then on the arcade,

Also in the manual on the iso img it says there is start code cheats, Command-Line parameters selectable at program launch via DOS Command-line or shortcut override following program path/name.exe: Sounds good but i was not able to Get them to work? any help????

:fou: RUSH lives on. i modified some of the sound files to, replaced with carmaggedon 1 ones, eg. checkpoint. 123 start, some collisions. when you hit trees, engine sounds, the stupid cable tram noise, the seagul and the crowd. haha dont no why guess im bored

Yesterday I installed Midway arcade treasures deluxe edition for PC just because of this game and I'm a bit disappointed that the graphics don't seem to be as good as the ones we got on the arcade machines. These ports for PC look like a game that would run on my pentium 100.

I will try the ROM for Mame x64 because the emulation gives us almost the same graphics as the arcade machines had.
