Im in the same boat... Looking for a new home printer. Frankly Im tired of inkjets drying up, making a bunch of noise, and working properly for only 12-18 months. Ive been researching for a new printer and ive come to the conclusion its time to switch to laser printers. This will be the first laser printer that I have used for home use. The model Im looking at is a Brother MFC7860DW for $199 on Amazon. The big difference that I will have to accept is it is monochrome only, no more color printing. I used to think that would be a waste not to have color printing but when I look back at all my printing jobs I bet 90% were B/W anyway and the ones that were in color didn't need to be.
I heard of Brother printers but never thought anything of the name until now. Apparently they have attained quite a name for themselves. Many users of Dell and HP are switching to Brother. Ive had an HP, Epson, and 2 Canon inkjets in the last 12 years or so. The scanning functions were fine (except the software that came with them), the printing of color photos were also fine but I rarely used it. The printing was generally slow and somewhat noisy when all the beeps and sounds were involved. Lastly the ink cartridges were drying up on me way too often. I dont print very often and when I bought a new cartridge or two they would be dried up within 3-4 months. All the printing cost comparisons between inkjets and lasers assume the inkjet cartridges will last until the final use of ink. Well reality in my experience is they never came close to the full usage before the liquid ink dried up. Laser printer toner never dries out. You can use it once and let it sit for 6 months without any problem. To me that is an immediate cost savings that I have ignored far too long.
In addition laser printers are less expensive now. You can get a basic laser for $130. A 3 in 1 laser for $160. A 3 in 1 wireless laser for $200.
The reviewers on Amazon, Newegg, and other sites give the MFC7860DW a 4 out of 5 stars. Cartridges for the Brother MFC7860DW are between $30-50 depending on whether you buy the 1200 page or 2600 page yield.
Take a look at the laser printers. Seems the best deal in my opinion. Inkjets can go away as far as Im concerned.
