My friend disabled the admin account on xp with no other accounts open but the user account. is there any way to fix this problem without reinstall? thanx.

"dude your getting a dell", is that kid trying to say he wants to stick his 'dell' in you?

how did you do that? admin is normally only available in safe mode, try booting into safe and see if you can get in as admin.

Next time you wave - use all your fingers

The good news: You CANT disable the admin account. It can never be locked out period.

The bad news: You are obviously very confused and will have great difficulty.

:)

Here's a tip:

By default, the Administrator account is not displayed on the Welcome Screen. To log in to the Administrator account, press Ctrl+Alt+Del, release the Del key, and press it again, while still holding down the Ctrl+Alt keys. This will change the Welcome Screen login to the Windows 2000 style log in, where you can now type Administrator and the password for the Admin account.

Now that you know how to log in as the Administrator, ask your friend for the password.

The Administrator account isn't disabled ... it's you that's locked out!

I'm using XP Home and have Win 2000 style logon turned on by default...but I can't logon as Administrator. It says Windows could not log you on because of an account restriction. I've heard that the Admin account is disabled in Home edition. That true, or am I an idiot?

I haven't used the Home Edition ... so I have no experience with that version. But I did find this on a newsgroup:

"First of all, I am assuming you are using XP Home. The Administrator login will only show on the login screen when the PC is booted into safe mode. (Admin login is disabled in Home). If you are using Pro, hit Alt-Ctrl-Del twice to bring up the legacy login dialog and login as the Administrator.

To test this, I did two things, one each on a different PC.

1st PC:

I booted up my account and gave the Administrator a password. Rebooted to the Recovery Console and typed the admin password and I was granted access. Then I rebooted to my account again and removed the password I set up and rebooted to the Recovery Console again. I pressed Enter when prompted for the password and I was granted access again.

2nd PC

Since I wasn't sure that creating and deleting the password skewed my test results, I booted the Recovery Console on a fresh install of Home. I pressed Enter when prompted for the password and I was granted access.

So I surmised that the other person had somehow created an Admin password, but since I wasn't there, I don't know. All I know is it worked for me, with and without a password on 2 different PC's."

(Edited slightly for spelling and content.)

Thanks for the links...lotta helpful stuff there. When I get some more time, I'll delve deeper into this. It's not a big deal really, since you can create Computer Admin accounts. Was just curious about it. Thanks.

actually odviously you can because there is no admin in safe mode or at all.

"dude your getting a dell", is that kid trying to say he wants to stick his 'dell' in you?

...than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. hehe.

YES there is an administrator account. This operating system IS windows NT/2000 after all.

At the welcome screen, just after boot up hold Ctrl-Alt and hit delete twice. It will give you a traditional PC/domain login dialog ala WinNT/2k. You can login to the administrator account from there. And NO, this particular account CANNOT be locked out. It will give you a painfully long pause after a number of failed attempts to slow down any automated password hacking but that's it...no account lockout.
