What is a DaughterBoard!?!?!

Guys,

Been searching the net for some explanation on what a daughterboard is, to my knowledge its a extension of a motherboard that will allow more PCI slots etc?
Excuse my limited knowledge but if someone could shed some light in 'leymen' terms would be great.
