can you still install a graphics card if your mother board has a video chipset

Yes.

The Video Chipset allows you to use the CPU to display the graphics if a dedicated graphics card is not installed.

However once a GPU is installed, the computer switches over to it.

You just need to verify that the Motherboard you have, has the correct slot for your Graphics Card (AGP, PCIe 1.x, 2.x 3.x)
