Crossfire at full x16 won't happen for Core2Duos until Intel releases X38 in September. Currently your options are P35 and P965 at x16/x4 or 975X at x8/x8. 975X is an older chipset, and at this point I wouldn't recommend buying a motherboard based on it. If you really feel like you are going to use crossfire, which isn't a very economical option, then you will have to wait for X38 to be out.

Off topic... the 975X is newer than the P965.

On topic... What CPU will you be using?

Asus P5W-DH Deluxe, Intel 975X Bad Axe 2 or Abit AW9D-Max if you are going to run crossfire, x8/x8 should be better then x16/x4. If you wait until September however, you can get dual PCI-E 2.0 x16 slots, since X38(the replacement of 975X) will be out. If you don't mind the x16/x4 configuration then an Asus P5K series board would be good.

My bad, I assumed higher numbers meant newer.... sorry.

On September 6 at 4:26  Now seriously, nobody knows exactly. There are rumors about some X38 boards with DDR2, but again nothing sure yet.

You can either get a P5W-DH Deluxe now or wait 2 or 3 or 4 weeks. Not worth waiting, IMO, but it's your choice.

Why I wouldn't wait:
- the 2900xt doesn't need the additional bandwidth of PCI-E 2.0, and by the time you throw away your 2900xt cards you'll be able to get a much nicer motherboard too.
- X38 mobos will be expensive and they will have bugs - like any brand new technology

I would wait until X38 mobo's start shipping; look for them mid september. As far as PSU goes you will need a biggy like Dr_Asik says above. I went with enermax galaxy dxx 850w. see it http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817194020
Anice thing about the x38 mobo's is that not only will it support 45nm cpu's but it will also support both ddr2 and 3. You say you hate ddr3 and i am guessing that is because of the elevated timings we have available at the moment. Remember though, thats just for the time being. Timings will improve quite a bit in the next 6 months or so and in the mean time you could use ddr2 ram.

Not all x38 motherboards will have dual support. At least, I don't expect that, it would be bad business practice to add $30 or whatever to all of them when most people don't care.

And TBH it's not the timings that bother me about DDR3, it's the cost. They cost several times more than DDR2 with the same performance.

The 1 gig is not that much better, really. And in some games it is not good at all. But if you can afford 2 of them then get them as soon as you can. An 800watt psu will be able to handle it but daamit...

Don't get the new stuff, i got my amd64 when it was BRAND NEW and all they had was the crap via chipset which made a 3500+ look like a 486. So avoid the newest techs.

No clue what mobo you need cause i am waiting for am3 to come before i do research.

If you want to see how much better the crossfire is than the 8800
