[SOLVED] What is intel speed step?

So guys i'm using a core 2 quad q6600 and in my bios there's an option called intel speed step. Can anyone explain what does it do when you turn in on or off?

It's a power saving mode that allows the cpu to operate slower when not used.

Yep, and the chipset, motherboard, and os all need to support it. Personally, on lga775 systems it doesn't make that much of a difference and I prefer that mine run 100% all the time as the delay from speedstep is annoying.
