What is the best CUP i can get with my old motherboard

I have quite an old motherboard
Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 Motherboard (Socket AM3+, Up to 32GB DDR3, USB 3.0, uATX)

and i'm worried that if i buy a newer CPU there might be problems can anyone tell me if that's true.

I would avoid the 125w cpus. While some maybe technically supported they tend to have throttling issues due to the boards weak vrms.

Could you recommend me any. My GPU is an MSI GTX 970 if that helps

Probably going to require a BIOS update, but I'd be looking at the AMD FX-8370E 95 watt processor.

Could i not get something like an Intel i7-5820K or would that be to much

You cant put an intel cpu on an AMD board. The 5820k requires an Intel socket 2011v3 board.

The link I provided is all the processors that are compatible with your motherboard.

As Bignastyid states, you cannot use an Intel processor on an AMD based motherboard.
