[SOLVED] What is the best way to migrate from ssd to nvme

(I hope this is the right forum to ask this, if not pls tell me where)
I upgraded my pc and took my ssd from the old one to the new one, after just a few minutes of updating it was all good and ready to go,
now I want to migrate/clone everything on this drive to the nvme on the motherboard,
then I'll probably convert my old ssd to the primary data storage and my old hdd to the secondary data storage.

the old ssd is 248GB kingston, the nvme is 512GB toshiba.
the nvme also has os on it, should I delete/format it.

(I understand that I need to use a third party program)

1. It makes sense right? this will improve performance?
2. What is the best/recommeded way to this?

Can you pls explain why cloning to MBR is a problem.

it just indicates that in GPT there will be a small 128MB partition at the start and I should place all the partitions after that partition

Yes, it is possible.
Many things are possible.

Can your new system boot from an MBR formatted NVMe drive?


Try it.
If it fails, you still have the original to try again.
And you always have the fallback of a full fresh install.

The issue here is that you have a lot of moving parts, all trying to happen at the same time.

Whole new system
SATA to NVMe
MBR to GPT

Any of those on their own can be an issue.

Ok but is there anyway this could affect the source disk? it just coping stuff from it, isn't it, this is my only concern

Done correctly, no.
The source should be fine.

Of course, people make mistakes, or erase the Source before verifying functionality of the Target.
See that here all the time.

Update:
MBR to GPT -> FAILURE / couldn't boot from nvme after the clone

after many fails to boot I decided to clone from
MBR to MBR -> SUCCESS / booted instantly, I'm writing from it right now.

I will keep the former ssd with the os for at least a month just as a backup, I have no pressure erasing it.

1. What is the problem with MBR again? is it so bad to keep the nvme as MBR? should I convert it to gpt still?
2. I think I read when I learned about nvme that it runs fastest when configured to pcie instead of sata in the bios, should I do such thing?
3. Is there any reason I should not expect windows 11 update sometime soon now that I have intel 8th gen cpu?

You've verified the system boots properly with ONLY the new drive connected? The old SSD physically disconnected?


Win 11? Do NOT worry about it or expect it to try to automagically update for several months.

hmm both are connected, I followed the tutorial and forgot you said to disconnect the old one, I can do it now.
It automatically changed the letter to c: on the nmve and to f: on the old ssd

Ok I booted with only the nvme connected everything seems fine.

Can you please check the last 2 min of this video he uses the rescue usb to recover boot or something, some are saying in the comments that it saved them and some are saying that it broke everything.

Lets assume your current drive dies. For whatever reason.
Of the OS gets borked up with a major virus.

Boot up from that RescueUSB, Recover.
Tell it where the Image is, and what drive you wish to apply it to.
Click click....done.

The system recovered exactly as it was when you made that Image.

I've used it, it works.
Anyone who says "it broke everything" did it wrong.

Create it, and save it in a desk drawer.

When/if you need it, you'll be glad you created it.
That Rescue thing is one part of a comprehensive backup routine.

It is NOT needed for just cloning from A to B.

It is NOT required for a clone operation.

It IS required as part of a comprehensive backup routine with Macrium Reflect.

You were on a SATA III drive.
Now you are on an NVMe drive.

If it is working, then leave it alone.
