I am no fanboi I use whats the best price/perf at the time. I have had strange network anomalies with AMD so the years of the Athlon and XP were spent with Intel. Went back 1 more time to AMD and sadly in the games I play my P3 1.0ghz out performed the 3200+ even with it OCed on a DFI Lanparty UT mainboard. Intel might be a huge company with most the market share but I couldnt buy a P4 heater for any reason. I wiated for the Core 2s B4 switching back. I have to say Intel is doing everything right currently. AMD better get off thier damn laurels or go bankrupt leaving its customers in the damn dark. Barcelona to me is another craptastic wait forever paper launch. If you have the goods put em out front dont hide behind NDA's.

That's just for CPU, don't make write my other components upgrade list

I work for the company that has some retail shops in my country, so almost every upgrade I make costs mostly few euros or nothing 8)

Well I only had one AMD chip. It was a 486DX2/50. It was great, but of course in those days there wasn't a lot of difference between manufacturers. The thing didn't even need a fan, just a small aluminum heatsink. As to the never owning another AMD CPU, it just seemed everytime I was in the market to get a new system, Intel was on top. The computer the had the 486, I upgraded with a Pentium Overdrive. The next build had a PIII 450, the following build had a PIII 1GHz. I had this system for awhile and then built a system with a P4 3.06GHz (Northwood, first to have HT), later upgraded CPU to a P4 3.2GHz E (yes a Prescott, big mistake). My next system would have had a X2 4400+ or Opteron 175, but the money I was expecting came late, and the C2D's were out.

What a coincidence, i want to work for that same company, lol

you're pretty lucky

Simple and to the point. What was your history with AMD processors? When did you get your first one, how fast was it, etc. You guys know what i'm getting at.

-My first was a 450MHz system from compaq that my mom bought me before I really knew anything about computers.
-Then I upgraded to a Duron 933 System and bought a Systemax computer with a 1GHz Thunderbird a couple months later.
-Then I went to an Athlon XP 2600 system, but i fried it overclocking
-Then an Athlon XP 2000+ got installed in that rig.
-Now I have my Athlon X2 4800+.

So what about you guys?

Please, no "amd sucks, intel is better" crap. This isn't an AMD VS INTEL thread.
my experience with AMD was rather.. short.

Athlon XP 3200+ from HP. i borrowed it from my ex-roommate, since he was more into Intel 3.0 Ghz 😛 . my current roommate bought it for 100 bucks, and have been using it for almost a year now.

Athlon 64 3000+ for my dad.

Athlon 64 3200+ was my previous gaming rig. not exactly high end stuff

all amd's from home grown systems

xp 1800+
xp 2400+ (used to upgrade my 1800+ but little difference)
64 3000+ (venice)
64 4000+ (san diego)

my intels were all from dells

p2 400mhz (first pc since commadore 64)
p3 900mhz (free from work)
p4 2.4ghz (inherited from relative)

1. K6-2/500 in a cheapie Compaq desktop
2. X2 4200+ Manchester in my hand-made desktop

I've also had a few Intel chips as well:
1. 80286/10
2. 80486SX2/50
3. Mobile Pentium 4-M/2.2 GHz (still heating up my laptop)

Overall, I'd have to say I liked the computers with AMD chips a lot better than the ones with Intel chips. The 286 was very limited in its capabilities, as was the 486, especially since the 486 was an FPU-less model. The K6-2/500 was the first very powerful processor I had and the first that was able to run a modern-type GUI OS instead of DOS or OS/2. It was very cheap but pretty quick. The P4-M was really not my first choice of a chip as I knew it ran hotter than hell even though it is "only" a 35-watt chip. As such, the notebook is big, heavy, and has an extremely loud fan to cool the processor off. I'd much rather had a PIII-M or Athlon XP-M, but pickings were slim when I got my notebook. There weren't very many XP-M notebooks around and the ones that existed were often pretty low-end, cruddy machines. The X2 4200+ is excellent as I'd never had my own SMP machine before and the performance of the 4200+ is far in excess of the old P4-M laptop.

That's probably the main problem with any cpu. By the time you want to upgrade, the technology changes and just every about every piece in the puzzle needs to be upgraded.

Yup. The only things that I even consider I can keep between builds are the monitors, keyboard, mouse, optical drives, and my memory card reader. HDDs, cases, and PSUs are iffier, and I always assume that RAM, motherboards, CPUs, GPUs and such cannot be upgraded and buy accordingly.

My debian runs smoothly on amd64. the amd processors run cool. good perf for price

i put together a amd64 winchester in a via 890 biostar board with linux fedora core and debian linux and also win64 preview. with Ballistix ddr 400 cl2 ram and a ati 9800 pro agp card. debian has the GRASS system for GIS.

Athlon 1GHZ Thunderbird
Athlon 64 3700+
Athlon 4800+ X2
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (sick of socket changes + uncompetitive performance against C2D)

I been married to AMD for 6 years, but since shes stopped putting out lately I am considering divorce.

It's almost a rule that after you say "I do" she says "I don't feel like it tonight" every night. She's got half or more of your stuff ransom against you rectifying the situation, too. Not good, but it's typical, unfortunately. Kind of explains why women are SO pushy to tie that knot, huh?

But unlike a normal divorce, she'll only take your motherboard with her as she leaves instead of half your system...
