What processor should I get for my GTX 970?

My current specs:
Motherboard: gigabyte GA-h61ma-d2v
CPU: Intel core i5 2400
GPU: Geforce GTX 970
RAM: 8GB DDR3
PSU: XFX TS 550W

I'm looking to get some upgrades for my PC since some of the games I play are starting to lag and have serious frame drops. I mainly want to upgrade the CPU so can someone tell me what would I should get for my current build. If I need to get a new motherboard too then that is fine.

How much are you looking to spend? If you want to get on a modern intel or ryzen platform you will need a new mobo and DDR4 RAM. Something like an i5 8400 or 8600k would be a good fit, or an equivalent ryzen processor.

I haven't figured out how much I can spend yet, I just wanted to get an idea of what I need to get to a good upgrade. Looks like I will need to get a new motherboard and ram. Any suggestions?

You could probably find a Core i7-3770 as a cheap upgrade in the mean time
