I have the lenovo legion y520 2018 with 8gb ddr4 ram, i5 7400, i tried to purchase ram in the past but failed with it fititng.

You should be looking at DDR4-2400MHz SO-DIMM sticks. A dual channel 2x8GB DDR4-2400MHz 1.2v kit should be a good kit to upgrade to. As a side note, please make sure you're on the latest BIOS version for your laptop prior to the ram upgrade.
