Ok so it's official that i will get a summer job which means i can get around 2000$ from working for 4 weeks. This will mean that i will have extra cash to add to my pc upgrade budget but what should i upgrade and when should i do it?

I was thinking about getting an upgrade to my system in a month or so and i was thinking about switching out my i7 4790k for a i5 8600k since i'm seeing a decline in performance from the cpu and the i7 is also getting quite hot which would make the i5 ideal since i mostly only play games on my pc and it's not gonna run that hot unless i OC the [watch your language] to 5ghz.

One of my concerns are that if i buy the I5 will i be able to do light editing from time to time and will my performance take a mayor hit if i multitask while playing games since i watch videos when i play games (it helps me relax i guess) and this would also be profitable because if the new gpu line up from nvidia come around the time i stop working it would mean i can more easily look up benchmarks for the gpu and the cpu together. Should i go for the I5 directly or should i wait untill the gpus come out. After i'm done with my summer job my total budget will be around 2435 dollars so if i buy a gpu and if Nvidia keeps their promise on the gpu performance upgrade since the 1000 series i will probably go with the XX80 model.

The 1080Ti is still quite a good card and will remain so. But, if you can wait till around July end or August, then consider that. Supposedly the GPU will be released then but it was also rumored to release this month. Take it with a grain of salt.

As i said i will wait for the next gpu line up and right now i have around 430 dollars to play around with which is about the i5 a motherboard and 16gb of ram and i will probably wait untill i've worked my part to buy another 16 gb but my question was is the i5 enough for gaming light editing and while gaming watching videos.

an i5-8600k is a great CPU, but in the end the 8700k is still better. It's not as big of a leap from 8600 to 8700 but that's something that will show in a few years from now rather than today.

I would strongly suggest going waiting around for the new line of GPUs (which should work out fine since you will be taking the summer to make the money for your new PC)

the rest of the system can be figured out once you have the money

The only difference is the editing capabilities and the slightly better gaming performance i will mostly just play games and watch videos at the same time so if the i5 can do that without taking a big hit in performance i'm fine

ultimately it's your choice. the 8600k's 6cores will be plenty good for gaming and editing. Although I'm leaning towards the i7 for you, judging from your current setup. Another thing to consider is (since it seems that you are in your teens?), When will you be able to upgrade your PC next time? I went with an i5 years ago as well thinking "ill just upgrade to another i5 later", not so much the scenario anymore, wish I would've gotten the i7 at the time since my responsibilities don't allow a budget for another PC.

another CPU to consider would be an i7-8700 (non-k). it'll give you very similar performance as an overclocked i5, but you'll have those HTs to keep your system going (as it ages that is)

Well since i live in a Scandinavian country and we 125 dollars for each child and my parents are really generous i get 125 dollars each month except for the summer where i get 75 dollars a month because of school. This allows me to be able to upgrade later on in the future quite easily and the 125 dollars a month only stops when i turn 18 which is still a year and a half away. I will also be able to get a summer job each summer and with a payment of around 2000$ i will be able to easily buy a fully loaded system each year. I just wondered if i should upgrade my I7 to a I5 8600k the i5 will have better temps and a pretty big performance gap between them. If i where to get the i5 in about a months time i can get 16 gb ram 3000hz the i5 and a decent motherboard i will mostly run the i5 on turbo and i wondered will the i5 be enough for gaming at 1080p and will i experience a small or large dip in performance if i multitask while gaming?? If i where to wait untill early June i can 1. look up the performance of the i7 8700k and the new line up of gpu and from there decide if i should buy the i7 or if i buy it now i can easily make a good find on what gpu fits my cpu and from there buy a gpu.

The i5 will be good enough for gaming easily at the majority of the resolutions. It is a very powerful chip. The 2 x 980 SLi you have is still quite powerful. Use them. You can upgrade them later when prices dip like you said.

What type of multitasking are you talking? Editing/Rendering and Gaming at the same time? Then there will be a dip in performance. Going i7 will not necessarily remove this dip, but it will soften the impact of the dip certainly.

I would hold off the GPU. For now, pick up the i5 if you are really in a crunch. You will need a new cooler because while the Hyper 212 is an okay starter unit, it cannot handle the OC of most chips from my experience. A Noctua should do good, maybe a D15s or D14.

If you do heavy multitasking, wait till June for the i7 and buy it then. Get the GPU's when prices drop. With your current cards, I would not upgrade at all unless the prices for the current 10xx cards severely drop.

OR a more radical idea is to buy the i5 now with the cooler and mobo and RAM, and when payday comes around, sell off the 8600k and pick up the 8700k. A simple swap.

What i meant by multitasking i just watch videos with chrome while playing games and i mostly play games such as Overwatch CS:GO ARK and other AAA games that i find interesting. But i will probably get the i5 and 16 gb and i won't be OCing the i5 so i think the 212 will be good enough for atleast a little while longer.

the 212 would not be enough

you need a competent cooling solution

something like the cryorig h5 ultimate at the very least

ideally the cryorig r1 or noctua nh-d15

the 8600k shouldn't struggle with the multi tasking that you are talking about. But I would strongly recommend as to NOT put a 212 cooler on that CPU, it's really not enough. the Evo 212 was great with 4 core CPUs, but it can hardly be of any good on the 6 core CPUs. I would suggest to go for the Cryorig H5 (as a minimum), Cryorig H7 is good too, but yields slightly lower OC results than the 5.

as far as 1080p gaming.... evne the 8th gen i3 can do pretty good in it... but.. now I come to wonder... what is the rest of your setup... are you running GTX980s SLI on a single 1080p monitor?

because... really... 1080p on single monitor.. lets say.. 24" .... a single gtx970 is more than enough....

I have 2 monitors one 60hz 1080p monitor that i watch videos on while i'm gaming and i have a 144hz 1080p monitor that i use to game on. Yes the 980 sli is enough for max settings 1080p on any game but i'm looking for an upgrade to my CPU and GPU so my room dosn't smell like battery acid and is 45*C constantly. And i need an upgrade since SLI isn't very supported which just makes it even worse that i payed for 2 cards and only get 1 cards worth of performance. Will the I5 be enough for light editing and watching videos while playing games and i won't OC so should i still upgrade my CPU cooler

Question from RedPanda_2 : "Should i upgrade??"

My suggestion is to save up and get the absolute best CPU you can if your going to be gaming. I got Final Fantasy XV for PC and that game uses every bit of the CPU and GPU. My i5 6500 with an RX 580 can barely keep up. Other new games will only get better and require more.

Think of it this way. You gotta wait an extra month or two and save up enough but once you do you will feel proud of the awesomeness of your system. You will know you didn't miss out. Sidenote: Waiting to save up also brings up possibility of lower prices for what you buy.

Question from RedPanda_2 : "Upgrading but should i wait?"

I'm thinking about upgrading my cpu from a i7 4790k to a i5 8600k i will have enough money to pay for the CPU motherboard and ram upgrade but i will get about 1800€ (for doing summer work) in 2 months of time and i get about 105€ per month (for just existing) should i do the upgrade and then use the money i get later to upgrade my GPU and case (it's the one with the nazi fans) or should i just wait untill i have 2610€ and buy a new system.

I would also like suggestions if you have anything else i could spend my 500€/600€ (that i have right now) i will gladly take any games suggestions to but if you do have a budget for around 1200€ (without the gpu since i will wait for the next line up coming in the summer) that i could maybe fiddle around with.

I'm also open to suggestions regarding the cpu upgrade since i will mostly be gaming and multitasking (watching games while playing) i really just need a good gaming cpu that i might be able to OC but tbh since i'm so trash at OCing i can also take any none unlocked intel cpu or if you have a better suggestion for gaming/multitasking in the ryzen line up that would be appreciated.

What i'm saying is 1. do you think upgrading now and then getting a gpu is good or should i wait for the new gpu line up to come and get a more expensive cpu and ram. 2, Do you have a bulild for around 1200€ (or less) that dosn't include a gpu and that i can maybe see as a pretty decent investment. 3. If i should upgrade now do you have any suggestions of maybe a better cpu for my needs or a cheaper none unlocked cpu that also gets decent framerate 4. Do you think i should just upgrade my gpu and keep the i7 and then save up for a 3000€ pc. ( it would take me to early next year to get the money but i'll be fine untill then i'm pretty sure.
