I have a pc with these specs:
intel core i7 6700k
asus z170-M Plus
16 GB RAM
MSI GTX 980 Armor

I want to upgrade my motherboard, I was thinking of getting a z370 motherboard for future proofing, but the new z370 platform dosent support my CPU. should I get a new CPU or get a new z170 motherboard?

To get a decent upgrade you'll need both. That fastest CPU your board supports is the 7700k and it's not worth it where you have a 6700k. Getting another Z170(or even a Z270) board doesn't make much sense and seems like more of a waste of time and money.

Depends on how much you want to spend. Currently the best bang for the buck is Ryzen.
A R5 3600 a good B450(or upcoming B550) and possibly ram(depending on the specs of your current ram), would be a good upgrade CPU wise but if you would see a great benefit would depend on what you use the system for. For gaming you wouldn't see a big difference as the limiting factor would be the GPU as the 6700k's 8 threads isn't going to hold back a GTX 980 even in newer titles.
