Question What should I tell him? An Experience!

Ok, so a few years ago I built my brother in law a budget 1080p Gaming PC. The computer was easily doing 80-120+ FPS at med-high settings in most games. I get a message from him some time later that the computer wasn't doing so great on FPS lately.

OS: W10
CPU: i5 9400f
GPU: XFX RX 580
PSU: 650 W CORSAIR
RAM: 16GB DDR4 3200
MoBo: MSI Pro B650M-P

We live an hour apart so usually when we drive out, we are tied up in family stuff and no time to look at computer issues. I took his computer home and didn't see anything wrong. I just figured he was watching videos of people hitting much higher and was bored with the FPS he was getting. So, I decided to upgrade his GPU to an RX 6600 as it was on sale at the time and he would see a decent increase in FPS.

After a while of not really hearing from him on the subject, he says "he's not complaining". I'm puzzled, so I ask why? He says he "would like to be getting to the 165hz in FPS". I'm thinking OH, He got a new monitor! The previous one was only 70hz. Then I asked him to send a video of his settings because he should be able to get close to that without losing to much eye candy. I start going through ALL his settings and everything is looking good but then I look at the resolution..... It says "1440p"....

I'm like BRO! What did you DO! You seriously got talked into a 1440p monitor when you have a 1080p setup! This IS WHY your FPS is getting floored.

I suggested that he Closet the 1440p until he can afford to replace nearly everything in his computer. Then, step back to a decent 1080p because I don't think he has another option. He is playing Everything at pretty much the lowest settings to get an ok amount of FPS. I'm still on 1080p so I don't know for sure but I gotta believe a 24"1080p 165hz+ 165fps+ @ High-Ultra settings, has to be a better Experience than a 27" 1440p 165hz on lowest settings and only getting 50-80 FPS. To note, he plays ONLY online Competitive Multiplayers, no single players.

Or he could just "downgrade" his settings to back 1080p and increase the FPS. Problem solved?

If he's dead set on higher resolutions, tell him to save for a 4K rig! No point in a minor boost to 1440p. (You can tell I'm no longer a gamer):)

Corsair is the brand of the PSU while 650W is the advertised wattage of the unit. What is the model of said Corsair unit? How old is the PSU?

You might want to holster your panicking for a little while. What is the make and model of the monitor? Just curious, did you run DDU prior to replacing the RX580 with the RX6600? You could probably get away with a higher pedigree GPU(after selling the RX6600) and a higher quality PSU if the one right now isn't of good quality.

Is this the grey labelled unit or the green labelled unit?

Monitor is an HP Omen 1440p 165hz.

I just noticed, you placed the wrong make and model of your motherboard, either that or your processor and ram are also the wrong make and model.

4K on that platform would be moot, he dug a hole for himself without asking first. Ask him to migrate to a more capable system. In fact, on paper had he waited a little he'd have been able to score some sweet deals during Black Friday to get his feet wet with 4K gaming.

The PSU is white label.

Yes that Monitor but the Non Curved.

Oh you right! The MoBo is MSI Pro B360M, the one I originally listed is an AMD board...

Not sure what you mean by 4k, the Monitor is 1440p not 4k. Though, I still believe fully, it was a mistake to get a 1440p monitor for that system.

Most folks update their monitor far less frequently than their PC in general.

That aspect about 27" looking bad on 1080p IMO has a LOT to do with how good your eyesight is. I think a lot of people would hardly notice and particularly in relation to all the upscaling and such going on these days.

To get him back to 1080p performance but using a 1440p monitor he needs another video card upgrade 7800XT would probably do, might need a new PSU also.

Possible a complete new system trying to get 165 FPS.
