Several months ago I was going through old CD-Roms and threw a bunch away. One of them was Windows 98 as I figured I have XP. It turns out my XP is the upgrade, NOT the full install. In the event of a major system crash I am SOL with just an upgrade in case I ever have to reinstall the OS. So my question is this: With Vista 6 months away I don't want to have to pay for Win XP. I was thinking of buying Win 98 but is the cost savings worth it? Am I better off buying an XP SP2 full program and buying the Vista upgrade when it comes out?

Thanks!!

This is coming from the dusty recesses of my memory but, as I remember, the upgrade looks for a valid copy of win.com. If you back up your present, XP version, windows folder to a cd, you can use that CD when the install disc asks for proof of ownership during a clean install.

I'm thinkin it dosent matter whos win 98 disk you put inif you do a reinstall..just so long as it sees one...borrow one if you ever have to do that..but I could be wrong..wouldn't be the first time and won't be the last..
