I have an old Acer Aspire 4315 which is just gathering dust on my shelf right now and I'm planning on repurposing it by installing a Linux Distro or ChromeOS . This laptop was bought back in 2008. Wayyy back when I was a kid.

I don't think that I can upgrade the CPU (Intel Celeron M Processor 560) but I'm looking on upgrading it with a 4 or 8gb stick of RAM but I'm not sure if its chipset would support it.
Also planning on changing the drive to an SSD to somehow make it faster.

How can I check if it's compatible with a 4gb or 8gb of RAM?

Fill it with concrete, drill a hole in one corner, tie a rope to it, then use as a boat anchor. You're not going to run anything modern on that dinosaur.

Will a Chromium OS or a Lightweight Linux Distro not work on this ancient device? I just don't want to throw it away 😭

You could run a very old version of Chrome OS or Linux, but what are you going to use it for anyway?

I guess, you could turn it into an old Arcade machine, lol.
