I bought a custom built PC from somebody and overall it is a fantastic PC. Some more demanding graphic games will just freeze with a black screen completely unresponsive and I'll have to reset the PC. After further looking into what may be causing the problem I seen that the previous owner only installed 4 GB RAM. I'm wanting to purchase some more RAM but not too sure on which EXACT type I should buy. My video card also says 4 GB GDDR5 memory. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with the RAM on my PC, whether it helps it or it is something different. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

ASUS Z97-E/USB3.1
Intel i7 Processor 3.6 GHZ
GEFORCE GTX 970

Hi Eddie :)

Your MB supports 4 x DIMM, Max. 32GB, DDR3 up to 3200 MHz frequency. Non-ECC, Un-buffered Dual Channel Memory Architecture.
Anything above/1600/1333 MHz Memory is considered an OC and may or may not work without Bios intervention. Also Supports Intel Extreme Memory Profile (XMP)
It is best to consult the MB QVL list for tested RAM.

This motherboard supports DDR3 RAM up to 32 GB. I'd recommend getting 2 * 4GB of DDR3, maybe 1600 Hz. Or 2*8GB, but that seems a little overkill for that build (according to me, but you may want to ask others about that).

However, the problem does not necessarily come from the RAM ; depending on the games you pay, 4GB of GDDR5 memory is simply not enough

Hope this helps - and if there is anything completely wrong in my answer, please let me know.

so are saying I might need a new graphics card?

It totally depends on what you want to do. For now, provided you don't plan on playing the newest games in ultra settings at 1440p, you should probably be fine for a while - the GTX 970 is still a pretty good card after all!
