In a very general sense you are already 'on par' with a card like the 6700XT. A 3070 is a little bit faster. IMO, if you were going to spend the money to want a significant change that you could actually seat of the pants feel, I would suggest something in the 40xx series.

Of course, at 1080/60 that would be a complete waste of money. You would want to consider a different monitor/higher resolution and framerate to take advantage of that manner of graphics power.

i am kind of looking for a bit a future-proofing pick up a GPU that will last me 4-5 years.

Been looking at used 3090 just to see where the average price is and here in the it £700-850

Personally, I don't see upgrading to GPU with 12GB as worth it when a 1080TI has 11GB VRAM. The only path I see if either a 3090 or 4090 Or whatever the equivalent is for AMD.

If I am going to upgrade from a 1080TI, it needs to be a worthy Upgrade that will last me a good few years.

For rpg/sims/mmo type games, fast action is not that important.
Is your 1080ti not doing the job?
Or, are you looking at a 4k monitor upgrade?
Or...??
Some time back I had a very satisfactory GTX1080ti FE edition.
I upgraded to a 4k monitor and it still worked well enough.
I was playing the civilization series mostly.
I upgraded to a 48" LG C1 oled 4k tv with a refresh of 120hz.
Turns out that the 1080ti did not have the hdmi 2.1 needed.
I changed to a RTX3070 which has performed very well and refreshes nicely at 120hz.
It even runs fs2020 well.
I think much stronger is really only applicable to fast action shooter type games.

What would be a good Upgrade for a 1080TI?
You'll have to tell us more than that.

  1. What is your CPU?
  2. What is your budget?
  3. What resolution does your monitor support?
  4. What resolution do you want to game at?
  5. What is your PSU make, model and wattage?

Without those, I could just say an RX 7900 XTX but that might be too expensive, your PSU might not be able to handle it, your monitor may not display 1440p or 4K which means that it's a waste and your CPU is probably too slow for it.
