What would be a better upgrade for gaming? My current specs are:

CPU: Intel 4460 @ 3.2ghz
GPU: PNY GeForce 760 2GB
Mobo: MSI Z97 Gaming 3
RAM: 16GB DDR3 1600mhz
SSD: Intel 730 Series 240GB
HDD: Toshiba 500GB
PSU: EVGA Standard 500W

Future Upgrades could be:
4790k + Cooler Master 750W V Series 80+ Gold Power Supply
or
MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Gaming Graphics Card

Dude you have 500 gb hard disk ? Why ? As games are gonna be asking more (64 GB min for gta 5) Upgrade to 1 TB or add another ssd, Processor is good if you want k series get a liquid or good cooler for overclocking, and about the GPU it's pretty good and also gonna last a while as nvidia isn't bringing anything new soon , also you can skip with processor and get a better or another LED or sound system , good luck

The cpu would be a good upgrade since you have a Z97 board. Rumor has it that the Haswell refresh and die shrunk Broadwell's life cycle will be shortened to usher in Skylake so if anything pop in a higher grade CPU like the K moniker and overclock it while you wait for a new GPU to release from both camps.

I'd also look for a larger storage drive before the CPU and as for the PSU, are you thinking of going multi GPU? I'd also be interested to know what chassis you have at the moment.

Ive got a $650 budget and I've finally got it worked out! Im going to get MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Gaming Graphics Card and a Western Digital 1TB Black and for my birthday in feb im going to get a 4790k and a Cooler Master 750W V Series 80+ Gold Power Supply then my computer is complete aha

All good selections :)

The reason I asked about a multi GPU scenario was because you intend to purchase a PSU that has about double what your system would require(add a little more when you add an overclock to that bag). You could go for a lower powered unit yet maintaining the current 80+ Gold rating(or more) provided you're not getting a very good deal on the CM 750 V.

Something I also consider is if you intend to add sleeving to the system and mange your cables, then a full modular unit helps you keep your warranty intact while getting a custom sleeved kit. I don't recommend going with cable extensions since they add more cables to the back and the stock cables starting from the PSU end look unprofessional.
